Interesting read here. I particularly liked his definition - "a person that allows himself to enjoy special advantages in interpersonal relations out of an entrenched sense of entitlement that immunises him against the complaints of other people"

How do you deal with these pricks in the water? I have heard and seen a few different approaches the last few months. Personally I like the silent treatment as I am not the violent type but occasionally can not stop myself saying something. I felt a bit threatened a while back when I confronted one of these A-holes after a blatant drop in. A week or so later when someone called his bluff he left in a blubbering mess. Stoked

Last surf I took off on a wave about 20 m deeper and 20 metre further out than the bloke who dropped in behind me. I had done a bottom turn and was trimming to my cutback when he dropped in behind. I then adjusted my line thinking "Not likely buddy" and aimed the longboard squarely at his legs resulting in me fading him into the foam and oblivion. On my way back out, after a bit of stink eye, he asked if I thought that was my wave as he had been waiting half an hour. I had been out about ten minutes. The wave is a very shifty peak and as far as I was concerned I was sitting on a completely different peak. Tough luck buddy.

I did feel bad about the aggressive fade as it is just a wave and it was only 3-4'. When I was younger I had the nickname the Axeman because of my propensity for meting out justice according to me. It is nothing I am proud of and these days I try to live by a mantra handed down by an elder - don't get in the race, find your own place, paddle down the face.

So who was the a-hole here?

I would suggest it was double trouble. And I like I said, it is not behaviour I condone or am proud of, and is something I try to avoid doing.

Having said that, a bloke at Snapper did bring out the rage in me last year - "Do that again and I am going to snap your fins out, shove them up your ... And punch you in the head" is how I believe it went.

....sigh.....maybe I am......

I just want a relaxing mellow surf where we all take in turns.

You know Teddy, we can all be Arseholes at times, sometimes without even trying to be.

What troubles me is that some people actually try to be Arseholes. Misguided as this seems they think they have a right to something that is someone else's or like in the case of Mr Drips friend, he had been in the water longer so it was his wave. Out the door goes the first person on the wave rule. In comes the it's mine and I am taking it rule.

I am a great believer in Karma, and I have seen the results of return of fate many times. Sometimes you have to wait a long time but you can almost guarantee that these creeps will get what's coming to them.

Nowadays I tend to leave them to their silly games and wander off somewhere else.

I stopped surfing crowded breaks years ago because of the a-hole factor. When it gets busy enough to you know you are going to have to be an a-hole to deal with the a-holes, I give it a swerve. I can get uncrowded beachies most of the time and when the swell starts cranking and only the points are working, i give it a miss. I could get my fair share (ie. not much), but the hassle ain't worth it anymore, especially if you have to weave through a crowd instead of surf the wave the way you want to. Plus, when someone does blatantly drop in on me, i don't like the mixture of hate/fear and homicidal urges that comes over me.I haven't had a great point wave for years and that's a high price to pay. But I have had many days on glassy peaks with just a couple of friendly faces and the clouds and the fish and the birds and little daydreams between nice waves, man.

Wise words fellas. And how I roll too. I will always take a drop in wave quality for an increase in wave count and less stress. Sometimes it turns out the drop in wave quality is only imaginary too. Last Saturday I paddled from one reefie to another to avoid a hassling crowd. Found myself alone on a wally, heavy right handed that was almost twice the size. And with one other bloke. ??

I'm not fit enough to be an arsehole anymore..

12 year old girls can out paddle me

But I agree anyone that puts there own enjoyment in front of others is an arsehole.
But as ET said, everyone has a bit of arsehole in them that can come out every now and then. The problem is people who are always like that..

I'll admit it I can be an a hole sometimes...but in general I surf spot that has two peaks if you know what your doing you can take the deep peak and race straight past the second peak, 90% of the blokes out there know each other surf together on big days and have have nice rotation going (generally), the a hole only really comes out when you get a noob in the lineup who :

a. Thinks they can sit on the second peak and go when they feel they have waited long enough..if you go from deep you have been up and done a turn before you even get to this peak
b. Paddles straight past everyone for the inside
c. Sat in the carpark when it was big but thinks he's king dick when it drop sunder 3 feet

I try to control my urges but have been known to tell people to get back to the end of the line, **** off back to Melbourne, **** off to the beach breaks etc

As I get older, I don't put up with snakes and I say something all the time now. We get the same A-holes at the local point will paddle out and sit inside you, catch the next wave, paddle out circle you while you paddle and catch it again. Me I just drop in and let them know. Now I'm no intimidating pressence. I'm nearly 60 and I weigh about 74kg ringing wet. But buggered if I'm going to let them get away with it. Some of the groms on mals, watch them and try the same things and I do the same to them. I suppose I'm semi a-hole.

Yep I can be an A-hole too at times, even last weekend according to some guy.

He'd been out for less than 10 minutes & already caught a few waves. Didn't say hello & not a familiar face. Apart from him & me there were 3 kids on shortboards. I was sitting further out waiting for something larger to come through. This guy is paddling out after catching a wave, I'm about 15m further out when I start paddling my log into this middle size wave. He paddles inside of me, I'm already standing, I look behind me & this guy swings around & late takeoffs the same fat wave. I think what a dick, shuffle up towards the nose & look back at him smiling. He say's, "asshole" not real loudly & I pretend I didn't hear it. He catches a couple more waves, basically going for everything that comes through & going for the waves the kids are going for who are really struggling on their SB's to get anything at all. I'd been calling them onto waves, pointing to take off spots etc. Then another medium size wave comes & I go for it & of course this guy drops in & I just cruised along behind him coz he was out on the shoulder not bothering me......moral of the story being, it was not crowded & I've already paddled 15m for a wave I'm not stopping for some competitive blow in snake.

But on the other hand when my local is infested with 666 & LB's, the waves are overhead & I'm on my shortboard. I will wait for them to pass & drop in late behind them, surfing the pocket while they're gunning for the shoulder. Most of the time they don't even know I'm there lol...this is kinda doing the same thing as the guy above. It could be said I have this sense of entitlement, coz I'm local & there's no way I can compete otherwise. Plus I figure I'm not hurting anyone, not calling anyone off waves & smiling (cheekily)

When its small & crowded its also not unusual for a number of us to go, I'll call people onto waves I'm already riding & cut back a bit to let them on. Sometimes non local people get pissed when they get involved with our party waves. Even when your miles in front, they'll blame you for them not making it through the middle section...we've all seen those old Hawaii surf vids where people are sharing these long fat waves. Sometimes thats just the kind of day it is & it can be a lot of fun

My regular wave is similar. There are the boys out on the big days and there is everyone else. In general, on a 3-5 foot day, it's those guys who get sit in a pack on the outside peak and take in turns on the set waves. Very few set waves get ridden by anyone else. Not that they are hassling as such, but we all know the lineup so well that if you don't sit with us you aren't getting a wave and sitting tightly with people who know each other can be intimidating.

If if someone tries the drop in or late take off on the second peak, the boys will nicely, but smart and cuttingly, let them know what a dog act it was. Things like "No one else allowed a wave hey?" And "nice wave, nice drop in".

Thanks for bringing up the subject Ted..

At a local spot here we have a semi point wave that only allows for about 5 guys to sit on the take off area..and you all know the guy that has to take every wave he can...he's on this forum...and it just s**ts me no end...even a verbal gets a greasy grinning reply.

These A*+holes have no thought for another surfer and don't give a flying about "share the stoke"...so I,like Wavelength, move away from the pack to a quieter spot...but I'll always express myself to these selfish T**ds

One of my best mates does that. Paddles past with a greasy smile and always claims no one else is sitting on the take off spot - "you drifted off the spot". Oh you mean the spot of the wave I have been surfing for 22 years and don't know very well. That spot? Aaaaaaarrrrgh.

Being an a-hole is just too time consuming IMO ha ha, what a waste of energy, goes against the reasons I get out there. I notice that some people do enjoy that attitude though, good luck to them!

Some people have no idea though. At my local last Friday loads of new faces in the line up. I paddled out and first wave got dropped in on, second wave a guy went scrambling from the outside over my legs (I'm already paddling into wave) and tries to take off inside me. He goes down as did i and when he comes up does the whole Arm thing as if to say "WTF" so i did explain to him that its not polite to be a dick. Then realised he had three mates and i had no one other than a couple of 14 years olds that knew me.. Anyway he took the advice and left. In the process though i turned and paddled out spoiling some guys wave and it still made me feel like a kook and ruined a great day in the water for me sadly..

My local has been absolutely invaded with new adult lidders. I can't wait for some real swell to belt the crap out them

There becomes a defining moment when people choose to be the way they are. My general question to these people is...Were you born a f...wit?
Sometimes i have been an asshole in life, when i was younger you would be told quick smart and sent to the back of the line, itis a valuable lesson... So i suppose when i tell someone im just doing my community a service
