I started surfing in the 70's. I can remember the first few issues of Tracks; "you a freer to flow within the wave". Still don't know if freer is a real word. So my first surfboard was about 5' long. I surfed till the mid 80's, and my boards were never longer than 6'6". Fast forward to 2012. I'm 53 and after surfing probably 20 times in 25 years I got a 8' board. I surfed more last winter than I have done since the 80's. Anyway a few of my old mates were baggin me for riding a big board. Getting filthy looks from others down the beach, people not talking to me. So I thought Ok!, I'm going back to the short boards! I'm going to be so f##ken groovy. I'm gonna rip! All the chicks will dig me and all the hot young shortboarders will be my friend. So I took my board to the surf shop to get sold. After a couple of days, I felt like I'd abandoned an old friend! 5 days later I was banging on their door! I nearly ran someone off the road on my way there! Can I have my board back please? The ding guy had cleaned it up (for a fee), she was like new. Spent today getting reacquainted in 3 foot beach break, with the sun out. The love affair continues.

Love my 9 ft board way more than my old 8 footer. Nobody laughs at my board, they just laugh when I ride it. Lacey is on the money as well. Have enjoyed being on my shorty lately.

Its the old story, your not having fun if your not catching waves, please yourself not your mates. A mate and I were sitting out at the end of the point today on longboards catching heaps while the shortboards were in further trying to get on these big fat rolling waves without much luck.
