Sometimes a bit of perspective is all you need

My parents did everything together including dying. Mum died five weeks ago and the old boy last Saturday.

I did Mums eulogy and now about to do Dads. Mums flowed like a poem, but I have been struggling with the Old Mans.

Due to the circumstances I have not surfed for the last four weeks and this would almost be a record.
I am lucky to have a place up the coast and today hit a favorite reefy all to myself. Crystal waters, wally sliders. The words for Dad came to me as I paddled around, this is what surfing is, good for the soul.

Forget your dog wars and whose got the best room and who can go where (which I find extremely amusing) and remember all you need is a little perspective

But WTF would I know I like to ride a sixer these days so theoretically I have not surfed in the last three years

Really sorry for your loss Twimby, when I read them first part of your post I was thinking that all you needed was to get out for a surf and your Old Man's words would come to you, and as I read further...... Well you know.

Take it easy mate, it's never easy losing your parents, because it certainly changes the perspective on a lot of things......

thing in resent years,you realise how
important family and friends are when
these events come into your life,I was
somewhat shielded from life and dead for
many years then got hit by 3 deaths both
parents and a great father inlaw.

All the best mate and your right surfing is
great for sole searching,I often reflect on
life while sitting out the back.

life makes me shake my head sometimes. good and bad. i am so thankful when i wake up every morning. pain and sorrow from the heart sucks hard so much.

You are so right about rising above these little forum dramas - and about how surfing (in all its forms) is good for the soul.
What you said about farewelling loved ones reminded me of this poem from Raymond Carver – the last words in his last book, written when he knew he was dying:

Had a few wines and forgot I had done it, until I logged in today

Had another little surf today and me, my son an hilly and his kids are
off mountain biking tomorrow. It is our new addiction

I find that there are 2 basic (generic) categories for death.
The half expected, and the unexpected... You know what I mean? Cancer, or general old age basically comes with tiny dose of "half expected". The totally unexpected ones are probably the toughest, but I haven't had to deal with any of those.

Funerals are an overall positive (I think). It gets a whole heap of good people together to celebrate a beautiful person who's time was up...

(make a positive from a negative!?)
