I begrudgingly had to drive to Townsville about '95 during a cyclone swell. Was living at Cooly and even Kirra was pumping.
I also had always wanted to surf 'The Last Righthander'. I drove in which at that time was about 90 mins off the highway on gravel roads, dodging cows and jumping the HT over the cattle grates. This was the main road in!
I get to the beach and it is f'en all time!
The point was 5 feet and barreling, the beaches as far as the eye can see towards 1770 a frames everywhere. Only about 4 people could really surf. I surfed the point for hours getting every wave I wanted. More barrels than a gold coast summer!
Been back 3 or 4 times since and had it 1 foot once, the rest flat. Amazing place, great people and home to the legendary 'Grom' at Reef 2 Beach surf shop. Erle Pederson the Kewarra jet bottom guy and Glen Cat Collins there as well. Great place, unreal vibe. You guys will have fun.
