Hey funky wave groovers,

Has anyone trialed this board? I've read previous comments about the earlier models and it appears that its an improvement from earlier model.

I'm 45 yo, 100 kg and 6ft, I currently ride a mini mal 7'10" x 21" x 3" which chugs along down the line. In saying that I've only been surfing for six months and have only just become reasonably consistent with timing waves, pop ups and fit enough to catch a few.

I'd like to grow into a board that I can at least do a few turns equivalent to a shorty, plus a bit of speed as where i normally surf is a short break.

Would appreciate some feedback

yep.

I have both the older SF in traditional PU and loved it, rode it as my #1 board for about 4yrs - and now I also have the new SFII in Epoxy - both 7'3" - which I have only surfed 7-8 times.

Both are good paddlers - the epoxy being slightly better than the fibreglass.

It took me some time to get used to the new board - but that was more about the diff between epoxy and PU - the additional buoyancy threw me for a while. I can't say I am fully in tune with it yet - but the last couple of surfs it started to do what I asked of it...

The new shape definitely feels faster - probably due to the deep single to double concave. It also seems to be a bit looser - and that may be due to the diff fin placement and tail shape - but I find that you really do need to have your back foot right above the fins - whereas the traditional fibreglass board seemed to be a lot more forgiving...

I ride both mine as quad - which in itself is noticeably different from a thruster config (3 fin).

Kadilak had the 8fter as his first board and only just moved to a longboard - and jbshack has the 6'6" or the 6'8"

PS - I too am 45yo - about 5'11" and around 112kg - been surfing for 31yrs... mostly 2-4ft fast breaking beachies... so they're not just for novices.

Thanks GPA for the detail and thanks also for the opinions, 8ft or 7ft 3, I'm more confused than ever.

I'm going to take a 7'3 in the water and see if my ambitions are as good as my capabilities.

No probs. 7'3" will def take your weight.

I looked at a number of other 'mid size' fat fish type boards - including the McT Bobsled and the Sweet Potato, Pod etc etc but went back to the 7S v2 because I knew it went well, and the other boards were down on overall volume - which at my weight I need.

Yes you could easily ride a sweet potato - I have a 5'10" and could have gone smaller. Have a look at their new range called the potato-nator - half way between a sweet potato and a dominator. Will give you a lot more range than an SP.

http://www.firewiresurfboards.com/quiver_boards.php?boardid=potatonator

I love the look of these machines. Spoke to a fella who has been riding one for a few months now and he never even bothers to use his SP anymore. The SP is the most fun board I have ever ridden....but its no good when it gets over about 3 ft -slides out and is almost impossible for me to control unless you keep your body position ultra low and ease right back on your turns. At 3 ft and under you will think you are Kelly Slater minus the style!

cheers - i'll have a look at the link. Just couldn't get my head around the arse-end of the SP - reminded me of a pregnant McCoy lazer-zap shape from the '80's... which I hated - only board I have traded after only 10 months...

I have a copy of a lazer-zap that a mate made for me.....its a weird machine. We put quads on it but its just too loose. Those square rails are really weird. I find its fine if its clean and no bigger than head high otherwise its absolutely useless. Its been fun though to ride but since I got the SP its been gathering dust. I lent it to a mate - who jumped off Dee Why point and timed it wrong - he is english after all! Anyway I finally fixed it up a few weeks back so might have to take it out for a spin sometime soon.

Hiding or upfront, come out?

Have I missed something?

I'm just a middle aged punter looking for a bit of fun on a board for an unfit geriatric who drinks too much bourbon.. is that a crime? I couldn't give a frogs fat arse if it is.

Bitch!
