Two frightening developments in 666 have me wondering if not getting into the Olympics has put them over the edge...we all know it was a long held dream of most 666 riders to one day don a one piece Lycra unitard and join there spirtual brethren...when they start coming up with ways to make something a bit sillier, sillier still I think its time to check the medication

lol thats a trip to watch that second vid. I thought you'd need a lot more speed to get up in the air like that...when Laird was doing that 20+ years ago he was getting towed into waves. But yeah. I much prefer burying a rail in a tight turn than floating above the water like that

Turning around and popping up would be a challenge.

I got smashed by a SUP at Tombies last week. Muppet threw his board as I was bottom turning around him. It was frightening seeing it come out of the foam to collect me. I had enough time to stand up a bit (I was leaning in the turn) and it smashed me in the arm. Ibuprofen and paracetamol for the next five days so I could sleep and surf. I told him in the car park his board had got me and, in a whiny voice, proclaimed it wasn't his fault. Next time instead of going around a SUP, I will pull the high line and risk collecting them. Rather be the collector than the collected.

No one that matters really gives a farrrrrrrk ? The sports is still in its infancy? They still arguing over what boards they should ride and the Olympic committee do not want another Americas cup style war on their hands? Imported boards cost too much this year? Hardly anyone globally has heard of it let alone had a go? It's too similar to the canoe / kayaking ? Not enough females competing? So many reasons one could imagine

Here is another side of it if I may.

You have a big wave breaking in front of you.

Your going to get smashed and not be able to hold the board.

There's a guy surfing down the line who cannot for some reason beyond me see whats going to happen.

instead gets as close as he can to the about to be uncontrolled board.

Thats just asking to be smacked .

not saying thats whats happened to you but I see this type of incident all the time

Or hold onto your board for as long as possible so the guy on the wave has a chance? Last time I checked it is incumbent on the guy in the water to get out of the surfers way. His body drag would have given me the half second I needed. I had a 9'4" longboard out yesterday and did that on a double head high wave.

Or climb on and paddle deep to get out of the way?

Or don't go out if you can't control your board? The SUPpers up there are kiters and sailboarders who can't surf.

Or go out where it's a SUP wave, not a world class barrel?

Or go surf another wave that doesn't have surfers on it?

Lots of possibilities.

I would suggest the main one is don't go out and endanger other surfers.

And, yes, I was trying to link it through to the next section. Most surfers would have paddled deep and copped it on the head rather than get in another surfers way.

Most people would have also said "Sorry. Are you okay?"

Yes sir I know all that. You are talking to some one who has surfed for nearly 40 years.

**** haopens. Your on our own. . A big wave comes and suddenly you have a guy coming at you at mac speed in a situation you cant do anything.about.
Im suggesting sometimes the man going at mac speed can do more rather then im going that line regardless.

As I pointed out to you but you chose to ignore I didnt say thats what happened to you

Ive been on both sides and dont worry.

I had a big blow up with 666 er on friday who didnt understand he was dropping in.
also 2 guys on longboards in 2 week nearly take me out failing to make the drops as they are dropping in on me

However im cool with you being the sterotype cool hardcore guy.

Ps you red thumbers can shove it up your you know what

Well I did say next time I would pull the high line rather than assume we all do the righty in the water.

I'd love to be cool, but I'm not.

And as far as hardcore goes, well I sat down the line on the second bubble at Tombies, did my best to dodge the sets on the big day. That's pretty soft core really.

I surf big boards down in the South West because I am not that competitive without the help. Like my coolness, I am far from hardcore.

But if that's my niche among the metrosexual Gold Coast boys who inhabit these parts, then I'll run with it.

Now to be 25 years younger and pull all those chicks that were chasing the cool hardcore guys.

And further to your own recent experiences, WA, outside of Perth, just never gets the crowds you deal with, nor the endless procession of beginners/tourists, so I guess I expect some degree of competency in the water, especially at Gnaraloo where the consequences of incompetency are potentially pretty dire.

That second vid is a trip. I've seen it on tow in surfboards but not a SUP. unreal how far out they can catch the waves, but just imagine if you get some idiot on it with no control how quickly that could cut someone's arm, leg or worse off.
