Have owned Outback equivalents several times over the years - nice cars. Treat them well and they will last you a long time. VWs are lovely cars but just be weary that when things go wrong they cost a bomb to fix. Jap cars are cheap to maintain in comparison. The Suburu AWD wagon is one of the most popular cars in NZ - all second hand Jap imports and there is a good reason they are so popular. I honestly do not think you can go wrong with one of those.
You make a good point Ted. I had a 2005 Impreza 2.5 RS and loved it. I am a bit weiry about the VW as they are reliable but you pay an absolute fortune to get them fixed. It's tough when you are on a bit of a limited budget and it is soo much cheaper to get cars in Vic and NSW but then you need friends to go and have a look.
I will continue the search.
Now that's not at all true about paying a fortune to get things fixed. First of all, they have to go wrong. I have a 2003 v6 Touareg Petrol. Got it with 120k on the clock for $21k and it now has 180k three years later. I've replaced one O2 sensor at $150, one set of front pads and rotors and a full set of tyres. Servicing is done by me, including the auto trans, and costs about $200-$300 a time. Brakes were $300 in parts and that includes rotors. They use the same pads andtrotters as a Porsche Cayenne and an Audi Q7. They share a lot of parts with Audi and Porsche, which keeps prices reasonable. Stay away from VW Dealers and you'll be fine. They're the ones making everyone think you can't fix stuff yourself, or get a local mechanic to fix it.
As a contra example an O2 sensor on an Outback is $300 and you can only get genuine. They have four of them. Stuff like spark plug changes are really tricky and expensive. To the point where you need to put iridium plugs in and hope to not change them for 100k km.
I might be a VW bigot, but for good reason. They are much more comfortable, well appointed and after driving one and comparing it to Korean or Jap, you will see the difference. So far in our family we've had a 2005 Transporter that was sold with 140k on the clock, my brother has an and a 2007 Transporter and we have an 89 Caravelle, as well as the Touareg. I've had a lot of cars, including Range Rovers and BMW, as well as Suzuki, Toyota and even a Lada, and the VWs have always been the most trouble free and the most enjoyable to own.
