Hey Guys,

I know this isn't longboarding but I know a few of you on here know and like cars. The wife has been hassling me for a year now to sell our prestigious 2006 Mitsubishi 380 as she hates it and wants a wagon. Our budget limits us as we want to spend about 12-15K. I originally was thinkging 2007ish Outback but now I am leaning towards a 2007ish Passat wagon. Anyone had any experience with these cars or have any opinions. I dont think I need the Subie as I don't need the AWD and it is a bit more thirsty on Petrol.

Any help would be appreciated.

McHenry,
I know nothing about the VW but we have just this month bought a 06 subie outback six cylinder boxer motor for my wife its got full leather fully optioned it had 120 thousand on the clock we paid 12 gran on the dot for it and we/she absolutely loves it and while it does go through a bit of petrol we both thimk its worth it and this motor will be good for 400,000 kms or more with regular servicing. The AWD makes the car stick to the road and it goes like stink we were at North point Moreton island a couple of years ago which is a pretty chewed up deep sand long 4wd trek to get to I was amazed one day to see an outback turn up fully loaded with a family a trailer and all their camping gear. You should be able to McHenry one off carsales with no problems.
Cheers Boof

Have owned Outback equivalents several times over the years - nice cars. Treat them well and they will last you a long time. VWs are lovely cars but just be weary that when things go wrong they cost a bomb to fix. Jap cars are cheap to maintain in comparison. The Suburu AWD wagon is one of the most popular cars in NZ - all second hand Jap imports and there is a good reason they are so popular. I honestly do not think you can go wrong with one of those.

I have a 2009 passat TDI but the sedan. The engine, gear box and fuel economy are fantastic. Do a internet search for Scoda superb wagon and I think you will be impressed as well, it is a Passat undercover and could be my next option. I have the top of the line CC Passat and the Scoda has exactly the same engine, gear box and fancy bells and whistles inside at about $15,000 less. You won't find a review that doesn't rate it as the best value for money in that market. Just don't let their hideous looking sedans scare you off!

You make a good point Ted. I had a 2005 Impreza 2.5 RS and loved it. I am a bit weiry about the VW as they are reliable but you pay an absolute fortune to get them fixed. It's tough when you are on a bit of a limited budget and it is soo much cheaper to get cars in Vic and NSW but then you need friends to go and have a look.

I will continue the search.

Yep I have had the TDI 2007 wagon great car on a trip got 5.3 k/L out of it very likable car and yep so long you can fit a real mal in it, that is the long version not the mid length new fandangle stuff people ride.... Parts are expensive, but what I found, being an old timer an all is it was so low I found it a chore to get in and out of the bloody thing... Got a forester now, cheap to run, parts cheap and I can get my mid length mal in it too...

Now that's not at all true about paying a fortune to get things fixed. First of all, they have to go wrong. I have a 2003 v6 Touareg Petrol. Got it with 120k on the clock for $21k and it now has 180k three years later. I've replaced one O2 sensor at $150, one set of front pads and rotors and a full set of tyres. Servicing is done by me, including the auto trans, and costs about $200-$300 a time. Brakes were $300 in parts and that includes rotors. They use the same pads andtrotters as a Porsche Cayenne and an Audi Q7. They share a lot of parts with Audi and Porsche, which keeps prices reasonable. Stay away from VW Dealers and you'll be fine. They're the ones making everyone think you can't fix stuff yourself, or get a local mechanic to fix it.

As a contra example an O2 sensor on an Outback is $300 and you can only get genuine. They have four of them. Stuff like spark plug changes are really tricky and expensive. To the point where you need to put iridium plugs in and hope to not change them for 100k km.

I might be a VW bigot, but for good reason. They are much more comfortable, well appointed and after driving one and comparing it to Korean or Jap, you will see the difference. So far in our family we've had a 2005 Transporter that was sold with 140k on the clock, my brother has an and a 2007 Transporter and we have an 89 Caravelle, as well as the Touareg. I've had a lot of cars, including Range Rovers and BMW, as well as Suzuki, Toyota and even a Lada, and the VWs have always been the most trouble free and the most enjoyable to own.

No worries McH, selling anything is a task. Especially a standard family type car. I had a 2006 Triumph Tiger that took me 6 months to sell and I dropped $1500 because I needed to move it on. I know blokes who have had their boats on the market for over a year. There are just too many new, cheap options on the market and no one wants a second hand 380 for $10k if they can get a Hyundai Gatz for not much more brand new with a 150,000km warranty.

I am selling the 380 for $6200 and willing to take $5500 just to move it on.

Will keep my eye out for a wagon. Cars are a lot more expensive in SA so I am going to look into VIC and NSW
