Some people just can't be bloody told .Ive known this guy for a while a very good surfer and fairly new to suping.
It was 1 foot ,great day for a 11' nalu ,he paddle out without a legrope,I said mate go in and get a Leggie,
Him being a bit older and wiser than me said I don't like leg ropes and I won't fall off,I said well what about the rocks in shore and
the kids on Boogie boards ,he looked at me like dirt, anyway long story short he feel off the board was heading for the rock ,i hooked on the wave and saved it from getting smashed ,the board just missing a kid .the board was only 2 month old .so i done the right thing .

should I have let his new $2200 nalu board get wrecked to prove a point ?

Anyway he thanked me ,but I called him a dickhead .And told him to grow up and think of others ,as I have been hit by a few sups
now ,and it bloody hurts.Always wear a legrope. ...you think you can catch them in time but no way.. even if it is 1 foot.

you did because you stopped a kid getting hit, if there was no one else there i would have let it sail off into the rocks

As I see it..

Wearing a leggy is about respecting the safety of other water users... And if one can't comprehend that, well they are a borderline Narscist..

safety of others for sure...AND your own safety...if something does go pear-shaped on you it's not a bad thing to be attached to a great big colourful flotation device.

Very true, but for me it is about reducing the risk of injury to all water users to low as reasonably practable by preventing uncontrolled water craft hitting anyone.

Imagine the injuries if every surf user decided to go without a leech?

You did the right thing whether a kid was involved or not. He would have learned his lesson.

My board is like a lethal weapon not sure if anyone would survive a full on hit front on. I think this has got a bit of an old surfing problem with shortboards.
Being a quasi local up the north coast I have seen a regress in the safety of shortboards, the nose is getting sharper and the fins too. i have witnessed a nose under the eyebrow, numerous fin gouges including the face and ears, one grommet had to be choppered to hunter hospital 2 hours away because his mates fins were too sharp and he copped a slash across the back of his legs.
More dangerous than shark attack these days.

But did he immediately went back to the beach to put a legrope?

I think you were right to save his board, even if there was no danger to the kids. He will be more prone to follow your advice if he owes you, rather be in conflict.

He went and done some flat water paddling ,in fear of loosing his board .again ...he was a ex....summer time longboarder ,some don't where leg ropes
they like the freedom.

i think my message got through....sups are dangerous when set loose ..I did get a bit angry at the time , only when kids are involved
but Ive calmed myself down now ....
