After I brought a sunova flow ,and have noticed most sunova boards have a mast track ,has anyone ever windsurfed theirs
I'm just wondering how it would go and what kind of wind strength you would need...
i have the 120& 130 litre flows ....if i was using a 130 litre board i would need 15 knots with a 7,0 .
I have not had the chance yet ...
just curious ...
HAS anyone had a session worth talking about ...

I have the Acid and have pondered about sailing it. The stock Sunova fins look big enough to windsurf and get up wind on. I must give it a go and report back.

I did have a Fanatic ProWave and did sail that. The Fanatic was slow to plane and slow to sail and hard to get up wind but was super loose to gybe.

I am tempted to convert my Deep Minion into a windfoil board seeing as it has the right dimensions.

Not a Sunova, but prototype test for my Search that is ordered...

Without the forward fin, very hard to get upwind but would reach back and forward OK

No but I have kited one in super light wind. Went ok but not good enough to repeat. Surely a proper windsurfer would be better especially rocker and having straps. Second hand windsurfers are so cheap why not buy something build for the task. I would imagine dropping the mast and boom onto the sup would not be good for it.
Lightwind floating around for a giggle would be about the limit of the performance I would say. Not even sure why they think it is worth putting them in.

Not a Sunova, but I have windsurfed some of my SUP boards:
True SUP boards have a rocker that do not plane well. You feel like you are pushing water and the board does not want to get on the plane.
They are super fun in waves, as you shlog along to get back to the peak, but once on the wave, they are much more "surfy" than true windsurfing boards. On flat water, they will not be fun at all however.

Hybrid SUPs like AHD Sealion are the best with a sail: a fast rocker that can actually plane with a sail, but enough rocker to be loose enough on the wave. But they feel a bit stiffer without a sail than a normal SUP.

If you just want to putt around on flat water or small waves they will be fine. Depends what your performance criteria is.

Hi. I had watched some video of wave sailing with the irig inflatable sail. Sounded like a sail that could do little damage to myself, the board and rig in waves was a good idea. I rented a medium sail (the come in 3 sizes) out in light wind on my 8'10" Speeed. The sail is a bit of a noodle and I could sail around on it (sub planing, but not fun and definitely would not use in waves).

Hmmm, yeah I've wave sailed my Flow 8'7 with a 5.3 and it was awful actually.
I went out thinking light wind waves would be good, no straps to worry about so plenty of foot room to move around the board... and all it did was bog and drag around. It had float but wouldn't get up on a wave and surf it, it bogged a lot and became very very stiff to turn, like the tail was dragging.
(you'll understand what I'm saying if you've ever light wind wave sailed)
The board will take a rig, plenty of space to rig flip and turn pivots on the tail (no flare gybes) but the biggest turn off was the lack of speed, it really didn't want to move very quick at all.
Conditions were 3ft x-on 15knts, Flow 8'7, 5.3 wave sail on RDM.

Not going to try it out on my Speeed, and that too has a mast track.

TBH I'm not sure why the tracks are in the boards...

You may have more success on your 8'10 Flow, but I wouldn't over rig it.. max 6.0 in light wind waves would be far better than trying to get it up ripping.

Youve got to have a go, let us know how you get on. My experience has put me right off doing it again.

ive got a screw in fitting for a mast base in my stubbie SUP.

thinking of putting sons rig 4.5 on it.

so far it doesn't sound good .
and i kinda thought so, being a windsurfer .and matching it next to my windsurfing boards ,volume in the wrong place ,rounded rails .not enough fin area .I do have some great Tabou boards ,
and the rig will be staying home unless i take a proper board ...hey... i listen to people .

down the track i will get a custom sunova ,I doubt if I will be getting a mast track in it .

i reckon you'd need 25 knots just to plane it ,i wouldn't like to have a board in that wind strength , with no footstaps .

I think you are totally missing the point.
they aren't meant to be brilliant windsurf boards, just give you another option if paddle conditions aren't perfect.

Shouldn't we compare it to the feeble SUP paddling? When it is too light to enjoy WS, KS but too windy to enjoy SUP/paddle.

I had great fun sailing 10ft fanatic sup in waist to shoulder waves in light winds. It was like wave sailing in slow motion. I was on a wave sailing training course and as winds were light the instructor made us all go out in sups in the waves. We all had a blast and learnt a heap as you had time to adjust hands and feet whilst on the waves. I see other instructors now using windsup in waves as part of the coaching method.
Flat water it sucked as board never felt balanced with the forces, but gybes are fun as the tails slides. Had a JP surf with mast mounting and used it when winds were light and no waves for core moves training. That was real helpful.

Yep! I have an 8'10 Skate and have sailed it a number of times on flat water and it performed much much better than i expected. Not as good as my windsurf boards of course but pretty damn good. I also have a Fanatic Allwave which is hopeless in comparison as it kept getting bogged down in the tail. I think the small tail and rocker plus the mast mount position too far back is the prob on that. The Skate has a big wide tail on it which seems to make all the difference. I rig a surprisingly small sail on it ( a 5.0 ) and can definitely get it planing when the wind is up ( >18knots). I plan to try my 7.2 on it next time and would expect planing in 15knots quite likely. I can get upwind with it with some persistence by digging the rail in. Even in light wind it moves along well. I am yet to wave sail it but I think it will do well there too. I am quite light for the board at 70kg which also might help . I wouldn`t expect the more surf oriented boards would do as well in the sailing dept as the skate.

Been busy as a bee Nozza, had two weeks off over Christmas and was so tired from paddling lots of kilometres I didn't even have a beer some nights.
There was absolutely no surf in Noosa until yesterday, so I put in lots of k's on the 14" Glide to build up some stamina. Both ocean and flatwater.
It gets bloody hard to keep up the strength and fitness when you pass 60.

Back at work now and back on a more regular path so expect some responses.

Have you met the new lad in next door?

sound good ...sounds like the nalu ,will be a windsup,as all i have with a track is the sunovas .flow.

good call...sunovabouy .and jungle man .penguin .it sounds like 10 foot and above is the go

keep paddling ET.fitness will come back ..the body says no but the mind says yes ...
its the heat ....nothing like a good paddling followed by a few beers .

Stock fins when windsurfing, but for surfing I swap out the centre fin now for a smaller fin to make it turn better. I got that suggestion from Bert B.
