My son finishes his semester @ Adleaide 1 July. I plan to fly down from the States then roll down to the Melbourne area. Would there be good SUP surfing in the area? Would need the hire boards and suits. Is a 3/2 warm enough? Also planning to go on up to Queensland to take in the great barrier reef. Any suggestions on where to go? Thanks

Adelaide to Melbourne - great drive plenty of waves along the way - not too many crew this side of the border between Adelaide and the great ocean road - some of the waves a little out of the way - no idea about SUP hire / travel between the Aus states some cheap boards on Buy N Sell.
A 4/3 wettie would be recommended - possibly a hoodie and booties if you don't like numb toes (still better than wearing booties). I'd class it as cold - around 13 degree Celsius water - but you may think we're a bunch of wusies depending on your local conditions

Enjoy the trip.

The SUP shops in Melbourne should be able to set you up with a hire board - The ZU, KR SUP and SHQ are all in the suburbs of Melbourne, and then there's Core Boardsports in Torquay, which is on the surf coast or Jacks Boards on the east coast (if you are staying in Melbourne, expect a 90 minute drive to nearest surf). This week, a 3/2 wetsuit is thick enough but the water temperature hasn't dropped yet and could do so any time now.

Cruise by Noosa on your way to the Reef. I lived there for 7 months in 85 and found it absolutely amazing for everything.
Prepare for crowds but there is so much more than just surf there

I had an amazing time at Heron Island when I was there.... Spend a few nights and take in a virgin reef on a magic island.
Boat there and Helicopter home... awesome way to see the Island as you leave
