I transport my 14 footer on a Suzuki Swift and there are substantial overhangs because the roof rack rails are so close together (and its longer than the whole car!). I never worried about it before because most my trips are local at 50kph.

Now I am doing more highway driving to get to downwind spots it concerns me how much pressure the overhangs of the board must be under especially when it is windy and I can feel the lift from the board on the car. I notice that kayakers and surf skis tie off at the nose and tail so i did some research and found this.

Do you think this is a good idea to protect a sup from folding in half on the highway? Anyone actually use something like this?

Suzuki Swift? DJ is your man for how to tame that beast.

(Although looking at that pic the gadget's designed for turn-of-the-century Subaru Outbacks )

I don't think I would bother if I have a subaru outback. I drive one occasionally for work and it feels like a aircraft carrier after my little swift.

DJ has pointed me to one of his posts explaining the extendy bar thing before but I have not tow bar. It just doesn't feel right having so much of the board unsupported so i think I will get it. Half a sup flying through someone windshield is not something I want to be responsible for. On a more selfish note I don't want my board damaged either.

I think that product is a great idea.. You need something to stop the sway/bounce..

I have made up a rear support that mounts on the tow-bar.
