Two new faces to watch...

Wellington Reis... surfed super well on a really short board. Guy has the full skill set.

Trialist Gabriela Sztamfer... beating Shak and Candice in Rd 1. Jeez.

That's horrific...

How come none of the contestants (well I haven't watched all the vid, maybe some did?) had the idea to get a true small wave board, instead of boards that just stop dead at each turn in these conditions, preventing them to use the upper part of the wave, and making them butt-ugly-paddling after each turn, just to be caught in the foam...

Competition in these conditions won't help sup surf sport at all.
It's quite boring.
Hope they rethink it before they definitely bury it.

It could be quite interesting with proper boards (10ft+ or mini-Simmons, or wide&short, ...) , the kind of boards that could more easily be used by a larger number of SUP riders, in a lot of places.

Dave Bohene rode (in the round I saw) a RNB which matches a bit that kind of board.

Today saw L. Diniz ride a ultra low volume board. That could be indeed a surf board. Insane!
I guess when you go that small, you don't need a paddle anymore... So what's the point? Maybe I'm a bit narrow minded.

I saw him also on such a board in the crappy conditions in Denmark last year. He scorest the highest wave of the round in his heat... but managed to catch only one wave in all his heat so he lost it.... (but he then won the contest afterwards)

Note that Kai Lenny was on a board with some volume (he only sank to his ankles, and was able to paddle with parallel feet nearly all the time), and Sean Poynter had rather reasonable dimensions (25.5" and 82l for his 72 kg according to the board markings and past interviews)

Kai paddled out where I was surfing, so I asked him if he had chosen a bigger board for the conditions and he said yes... a bit longer and slightly higher volume.

He was pretty near water level while some guys were waist deep in the water... pretty odd looking when you are next to them in the line-up.

The last day, the waves were clean and well shaped.
They all ripped bags out of them.

Watching Kai in the crap waves, out of the contest zone, was pretty cool.
doing verts and floaters on waves that could barely move me on a "big" board.... these folks are very fun to watch

All in all.... a fun event to attend!

My friend Evelyn was doing live commentary with Dave Bohene.
I really wanted to talk to Dave, as I find him a very cool and funny individual plus we have mutual friends...
but he was "on mic" all day and didn't go to the after party.
I have owned a few Infinity's back in my prone days and have huge respect for the Blurr and his Dad.

Thanks for info. And yes, I think the infinity RNB is quietly influencing a lot of board designs... Including the latest - very fine - Gong Karmen.
