Hey crew,

There is a lot of talk as to whether you need a board bag or not.

Some people use them daily and absolutely rely on their bags and others will tell you that they hate them.
Here are 5 reasons why you absolutely DO NEED a bag!

Good reasons but there's one you've forgotten and it is the main reason I bought one and that is to stop the roof of my car rusting out from the salt water. My last car had some serious cancer on both the roof and around the top of the windscreen so when I bought my new car I bought a cover too. As a bonus my 14' Lahui Kai looks almost new after 12 months.

Resale value.. it's often easier to sell a second hand board if it comes with a bag.

My board is stored in a special little SUP and kitesurf shed, and fits inside my 4X4 but I think the best idea I got from the article was to protect against UV rays.

FROM NOW ON I WILL ONLY SUP WHILE KEEPING MY BOARD BAG ON.

Then it will stay pearly white FOREVER!!!! (Although Ill never get to see it cause I don't want those UV rays to get at it)

I have a board bag......mainly used as a seat cover on back seat of car when taking friend's dogs to beach
That said....I do not like leaving boards in the sunshine

Just a warning: keep your board bag as much open as possible, to let the board dry. I zip around the tail & stop there.

Keeping a wet board in a closed bags has 2 drawbacks:
- the paint or varnish of production boards may develop blisters via osmosis (no issue for hotcoated customs)
- water in vapor format will go through the goretex vents and water will lodge in the blank (no issue if no vents)

Wipe the board and paddle with a damp chamois cloth to dry it and remove most of the salt.

6. They have straps to carry them
7. you can stand on it when your putting your wetty on so you don't get sand or stones through your suit
8. you can stand on it to take your wetty off to avoid heaps of ground grit going through your wetty as you get it off.

Careful of dark coloured board bags in the sun very hot especially if done up.

If board bag sealed up the deck grip can get a bit wiffy

My problem with boardbags is that their zippers corrode.
I have 12 boardbags for windsurf and sup boards and only 2 of them still have a zipper that works.

Are there any boardbags around with corrosion resistant zippers ?

I need to pack two 7'4" 's and an 8'0" for air travel...

I never use a board bag for day to day stuff , but on surf trips it's a must . The boards stack much easier on the roof and if your straps loosen because of all the different shaped boards they are less likely to fly off. For international travel put a board sock over your board and then put it in the cover plus wrap your towel and clothes around it. So get a cover that is a bit big and not a tight fit and as Beerdead said you can sleep in them , we all did a couple of years ago at Merimbula , we arrived at 2am with no where to stay. Worst night sleep Eva but at least we were warm.

silicone spray on the zips twice a year is all you need.

Of course, look for big-dented (for sand) plastic (for salt) zippers. Many brands have them.

On the opposite, brands selling bags with small-dented metal zippers show that they don't know what they are doing ;-)

I'm afraid that your immigration authorities might disappoint you, because they did let me in.

And when I was in Australia, I used my board bag to protect my baby from the dingoes.
