Hi folks, I'm spending the next month or so in Tweed heads. I have brought my Placid with me as I want to Sup surf up this way. I was at Cooly/Kirra beaches yesterday just watching the surfers and I saw only one paddle boarder who was well away from the main breaks. I am hoping a local BM can give me some advice on where the best Sup spots are from Yamba to Sunshine coast, hopefully where Sup boarders are welcome. I am not sure they are looked on too favourably at Kirra and surrounds. Cheers.

Sup is fine at Kirra etc I surf there all the time, I have a mate who lives up there and he foils with all the rest, its crowded and you dont always get many waves but its not agro.

Hi Lizardman, I mostly go out at Currumbin Alley mostly down the line a bit or Lacey's Lane past the groin, too crowded right off the point and a lot of backwash making it a bit lumpy to stand.
Getting a car park there is a hassle unless you get there in the dark.
Greenmount or Kirra is pretty good sometimes, but massively crowded when it's good.
Yeah not many people sup anymore, taken over by foils and foil drives, won't be happening to me.
I hit the beach breaks now and then at Mermaid beach

Cheers mate, I went for a paddle yesterday morning around 8am at Greenmount and struggled to find a carpark. I don't have much experience sipping in ocean beach breaks but I really struggled to ride a wave. I thought my 8'7' placid would go alright but I feel my 9x28 Revolution might have been a better option to have brought up with me. I learnt one thing is that probably not to bother trying for a surf on a weekend it was pretty busy.

Hey LM the stretch anywhere between Nth Kirra and Currumbin beach has quieter waves-mainly because lower B/C grade stuff but there's always the odd runner. I haven't surfed the goldy in years (thank fk) and can't speak to what the banks are like but it's a nice drive if nothing else and there's car parks-or at least there was.
To be honest south is where you should be searching

Cheers mate, I received the go South advice from a guy in the same apartment block so I will head down that way.

The Sunny Coast has loads of SUP friendly spots. My favourite is the Kawana stretch.. theres plenty of banks. Usually quite steep at low tides and fatter at high tide.

There are a few point breaks eg Moffat beach. Quite a fat wave.. loads of long boarder or fish style boards.

The tourist spots of Alex, Maroochydore and Noosa are fun... but crowded... frankly i dont do crowds so avoid these places (and the GC and surrounds).

If you have a couple of different style boards you can SUP surf this area more days than not.... hence i moved here. On windy mornings i paddle the lakes/canals for exercise.
