Guys,
Am still looking to make a start by getting a 14 footer, so definitely new to dw'ing etc, so forgive me if the answer is obvious.....

Aside from dedicated race categories, when would you choose a 12'6 over a 14 footer?
The only time I can imagine is in heavy surf type conditions?

Thanks,
Scott.

If you are going to dedicate your self to marathons, D/W's etc go a 14' er. Most races aren't Tech races. Why go in and out thru the surf if you dont have to. And 14' is better for flat water, into the wind and D/Wing anyway.

I Like 14,s over 12,6 , but 12,6 is way better in the surf and possibly not far behind 14 in downwind.

I'm 83 kilos & had 4 sessions on my new 2014 Fanatic Falcon Carbon 14???0??? ?? 24.75???
Love the board, been on the ocean once with windy & choppy conditions& the river 3 times to date.
6 months SUP experience in general & my previous board was a Coreban Dart 14' x 29"
Currently finding the less width challenging, however I'm up for it & staying on it :-)
Also booked in for 2 of your Perth sessions Pete, can't wait

Love the board & bought if for mainly flat water racing & DW during the summer once I get my skill set up.

Interesting TeaTree, that is probably what I expected to be the case - for an average Joe anyway, no doubt the more advanced the paddler the greater the margin between the 12'6 and 14.

Sounds good Chris, nice choice of board by the sound of things. Due to budget constraints I am probably looking for the 2013 model, probably 27.5" for a starting point, and hopefully progress from there.

Cheers,
Scott.

Nah Pete, forecast tomorrow is for a steamy 15 degrees but there should be a nice 25 knots or so sea breeze coming up from Western Tassie in the afternoon to make sure we don't overcook.

Dont forget the paddle , earlier i went in and traded my QB 100 for a fanatic paddle and they are chalk and cheeese. The QB was way to big a surface area for me and i found myself tiring very quickly using it , went for a local bridge to bridge run with my new paddle and smashed my best timeI now think smaller blade area is the go or at least longer blade area is the go , it was heaps lighter too and my shoulders which usually always hurt untill i warm right up , where fine too. So my advice would be skimp on the board if you have too but invest in a good paddle

Here,s my take for what its worth. at 83 kg-14'. At 70kg- loving 12'6s for every thing. Those small fanatic inegra paddles are the sh1t

Sorry to hijack the thread.. What is it that everyone is raving about these new inegra fanatic paddles.. I'm tossing up spending the money on the top end probably a Ke nalu but am I wasting my money are these inegras that good?

On the board size I agree lighter guys 12"6 are flying.. I'm 90 kg and feel sluggish on them 14 for heavier guys for an all round use board distance and training board

Im not a brand whore mate , but i am stoked with this paddle after one session with it , havent tried the new qb slim jim but that looks good to me also.I found with the QB 100 awesome for power but too much for prolonged sessions , i also think the shaft needs some good flex.Have never tried a Ke Nalu but Im stoked with the new fanatic paddle.if it works it works , and it works for me , very comfortable. When you you look at C1 canoe racing or K1 or surf ski blades they dont have a lot of surface area but are long and narrow. I think this is the go for racing , the tear drop shape for surfing.

i've been red thumbed above, but i'm just giving my take on it being 80 something k's and struggling on 12'6 s to 70 k's and really liking them. i've been on both sides so to speak

imo to be competitive, for 'most' people, at 80 plus k's a 14' er is the go

The 7.5 i think. If you where racing over a short distance a bigger blade is the go , but for bop and distance stuff a smaller surface area is the go

In what way do you mean a waist Mac? To big to small ?
The Kenalu is 95inchs so 5 more than the small fanatic . I'm coming from a 100inch which I felt too big.. The difference in these two blade shapes really are very different also.
Trying the Kenalu tomorrow.. Will try an inegra if possible to compare

ha, yeah mate, nothing like stamping it as your own. I wouldn't mind trying a decent adjustable at some stage, there are days in the surf when I wonder if I would be better off a couple of inches shorter. And my paddle too.

I'm sure I'll cop the brand pimp red thumb here but the Starboard 3 piece adjustable made from their premium carbon construction is ridiculously light for an adjustable and is a perfect travel paddle - you could take it as carry on luggage. It's available in either the Enduro tear drop shape or the High Aspect race shape blade.

Haha someone did red thumb that. Surley a gee up.
I actually checked the new starboard paddles out yesterday.. These are so well priced and look bullet proof. Wouldn't be a bad option
