Hi, whats the best way to stay warm and dry while sup surfing. Im new to the sport and have only used a wetsuit. A friend suggested a polypropylene top on its own was more suited as it wicks the moisture away and drys you quickly. i am very sensitive to the cold water and wind and warmth is my main priority. Ive also come across Neoprene Shirts, & Metalite Tops in my online searches. My secondhand steamer is on its last legs so ready for something new. any advice is much appreciated. Btw budget is under $250 hopefully

mate if you get a wetsuit that is sealed it will do the job, dont know where your from in Aus but a 3/2 is pretty suitable, maybe a 4/3 if your in Vic, I would look at buying a wetsuit in the next month or so as winter is ending and shops will be getting rid of stock so can pick up a bargain.

Wazza appears to be from Qld. Didn't think you guys knew what a wetsuit is, although we have seen some whinges on here about "freezing" water temps if it bottoms out at 19C. Come down south and enjoy the true delights of the Southern Ocean!

But, back on topic, if you have a good quality wetsuit with sealed seams etc then I don't think you need more than a 3/2 wettie on a SUP. I'm at the end of my second Vic winter where I haven't had to wear more than my 3/2. Since getting off my short board I think I can just about retire my 4/3. I don't have much experience with polypropylene, but would think that a smooth skin wettie would provide better protection from wind chill.

I think it depends on how much time you spend in the water!
I've been using the Adrenalin 2P Thermal gear for winter paddling and I've been suprised how warm I am after a cold river dunking!

Polypropylene top to keep the upper body warm.

Speedos and fingerless gloves to insulate the tackle and palms of your hands.

I wear a Ronstan Skiff Suit (Long John) Super toasty despite being 3/2 and a Quicksilver SUP Paddle Jacket. All up I had change out of $240. Bought paddle jacket online from Quicksilver, and most marine chandlery's will be able to stock or get in the Long John. I found some steamers too restrictive in shoulder movement, but this combo is a ripper. I usually wear a rashie under the Long John and if i get too hot, just peel the paddle jacket off and the rashie provides some protection from wind for the arms.

+1 for the Long John. I just purchase a long john and the freedom of movement in the arms is excellent. I am still experimenting with outer layers though. Will look at a paddle jacket.
