I am thinking my 9'10" Allwave has too much nose rocker today.

What do you guys think?

I read the title and thought WTF does he mean, to much nose rocker on an all wave, no way.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.

On the plus side, it now fits inside the car and can be called a 4'11" x 2.

Wrong place at the wrong time, can happen to any board from any brand. Maybe the full carbon boards are stronger in this sort of shore break impact, who really knows!

It is fixable though, certainly an easy job to dry out the foam on the inside before you repair it... If you are careful it doesn't even add much weight and lets you get all arty on the paint job and deck grip.

Mate fished a 'two piece' 12 footer out of the rubbish skip from a local SUP shop, there was a fault and the manufacturer had a policy that if the board was replaced under warranty the old one had to be destroyed. He fixed it up and has been paddling it for years!

I was paddling back out and got caught right at the break of a large set. I thought I could punch through the wave and as I paddled up the face the lip came over and smashed me.

The board split at the front of the handle / mast base fitting. The cloth around the fitting is really dry. Very little resin impregnated the cloth.

As for virtually indestructible... No way. Lots of foam and a very thin / light skin.

I can tell you something though... half a board sure does pull less on the leg rope.

very unlucky but it was probably just wrong place wrong time like said the amount of weight of the lip of even a small wave is crazy and when put up against a board that has a lot of buoyancy and surface area i am surprised that more dont break.

After spend a lot of time repairing the hrs boards for people ( they all appear dry) i am pretty sure the manufactures are putting a filler ie microballons in with the resin to make the resin go further as it is the most expensive part of building a board, it wouldn't take much to make a huge saving when in mass production, Its certainly not something that would be used in the hand shaping and glassing of a board.

you right charleeuk, Manufacturers save epoxy resin which is the dearest of the price, they got labour for few money so they hand mix a bit of resin with a lot air bubbles and cheap stuff
If this thick board traditional laminating glass, she would flex before snapping in two. As well as triple fourniture cost.

Plus the handle box is concentrating tension in the cross section and foot pressure reduces the thickness of section. So the board has to break into their locations.

I hope it doesn't mean that Fanatic skimped on the new version to save weight. I ordered a 2014 Prowave in HRS because I really have put my Allwaves through the wringer with no problems.

The staples are used to hold layers while bagging, this is just useful, no worry about.
There is many ways to build boards then many qualities and difference costs as well. Most of boards are made to not get dings staying aside of push bike and clippers in a garage rather than standing a long period wave close out...
IMO: SUP should be made like quality surfboard, just foam, stringer and strong laminated glasses.

Good to know Kami, I've had a couple of production boards where I could see the staples under the resin and had wondered why they would be there, but as they weren't sticking out or affecting the performance of the boards in any way, I've never bothered to ask.

... and no these boards were not Fanatics!!! Just shows its a normal practice for mass-production boards and not something to worry about.

I am all so pretty sure i have see chopped strand fibreglass matt in a few hrs boards along with things like pvc waste pipe for drain holes and even metal staples which i have no idea why they were there.

I have all so had a few repairs which are normally noses or corners were huge chunks have chipped off were almost a inch of the nose or corner was totally made of resign and filler. Im starting to think the only reason boards from china and the like have got lighter is that they put more micro balloons in with the resin than they used to.

I think this is happening pretty much across the board with most of the manufacturers it really is shocking what is hiding bellow all that paint a lot of the time.

Is this the same Charlie that was sponsored of fanatic and loved the boards who now does his own custom boards but now wants to say how bad other boards are been made? I have seen plenty of customs I would not be proud off as well, so are you saying custom guys are perfect and dont make mistakes? Because I have about 10 boards floating around here where I could prove they are not!!

yes i was sponsored by fanatic however there was only one board i ever actually like and that was my 2012 fly 12'6 which was one of the pre productions ones so better made and my fanatic skate 99 freestyle. I loved that board and sill have it and sometimes race it, the 2013 board were not to my personal taste and didnt work for the conditions I paddle and was told i could not race my 2012 so after trying a few other board i realised i could do better so i started to build boards for myself and have done a few for friends.

Over the years i have done hundreds of repairs for people and it is quite clear quality has drooped from a lot of the manufactures. I am sure there are bad customs out there and i never said there was not but in this case i was talking about the hrs construction that a lot of manufactures use and i see the same issues in both naish fanatic and starboard and many of the other brands coming out of these factories. I am yet however to see a custom that had the resin bulked out!

The resin bulking that i am talking about is on every hrs board not just one here and its the same on all of the brands and i can see no other reason than just cutting cost at the price of quality.

The only one of the mass produced boards that i have come across that has impressed me so far with its quality strength and weight is jimmy lewis and i think a lot of companies should take a look at there boards because they obviously pay close attention to the details and is why they can build a light and extremely strong board just from glass so its not that they cant build good boards its just a lot of companies are choosing to cut corners

Was there any sort of resolution or compensation (in terms of warranty) from Fanatic? Did you even bother making any claim?

Speaking as an owner of two Fanatic boards, I've never suffered more than a minor scratch or surface scuff on either one....or my previous first generation Allwave. My usual spots all are of the shore break variety and I don't shy away from things when it gets rough. I'm a large sized operator with intermediate skills and questionable judgement.

I also have a 2014 Prowave on order, I hope Fanatic's construction hasn't gone south in terms of quality.

Good luck with the repair, very interested to see how it turns out....please post a photo when you get the board back.

I've been riding boards for 20+ years, and I know when I break one, I earned it. Great to see LordRumpunc own it.

Been over the falls many times, and surprised (and stoked) to see my production boards still in one piece.

My comments on the construction are more for information / observation. This is how production boards are now made and if you don't like it you better go custom (and specify the construction).

Agreed .. I just had a new surfboard made, and I know full well that's it weak .. I can't use it for kiting, or I'll break it in a few sessions.

But .. it's light, so will perform really well ... just can't afford too many major stacks.

well, the problem is clear to me... that Allwave simply needed a central stringer painted on! ;) It seems the parabolic (perimeter) stringers painted onto it, just weren't quite strong enough! That "chair" board has both stringers painted on, so it would be plenty strong (?) ;) :D
