I wasn't sure where else to post this so here it is anyway. I'm honestly surprised with SB being an Australian site that it doesn't have a surfski category or even a single/double outrigger section. The reason I bring this up is because I've been SUPing for about 15 years off and on (flatwater only) and a couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to demo an OC1 in my area (Mission Bay, San Diego). Holy glide bliss Batman I was amazed. Hopefully I'll get to try a surfski next. Anyone do either of these activities along with SUP?

I've used the surfski a lot for downwinders, the glide is indeed amazing so connecting bumbs is way easyer and very fast. I had more fun than on a stand up back then. Started in an Epic V8 and then a Stellar wich was a step up. This was before anyone used a foil for downwinders. My downwing board back than was a SIC Bullet but offcourse a Surfski is much faster.

Yeah I can imagine a ski being much faster. Have you tried an OC1?

I've also been SUP'ing for over 15 yrs and in recent years I bought an OC1 and I use it along with stand up paddling.. I spent most of yesterday afternoon on mine and as I'm getting older I'm loving the OC1 more and more..

It's fast but more importantly it's much more relaxing.. I love the SUP style paddling motion and I find the double blade ski/kayak paddling much harder.. I have tried friends ski's and I had no chance of balancing on them.. I'm sure a wider and more stable ski would make a big difference but I quickly decided I don't like them..

My sup'ing the last couple of years has been limited as I spend more time on a ski. I come from a whitewater and ocean /sea kayak background so found the sup a nice change (and a great workout)
Despite my background, I have no chance staying up in a flat water racing K1 and really really struggled with a (near) elite ski in the ocean. I am getting rid of it and bought myself an intermediate level ski which is bliss. I have a 26" and 32"? SUP and find them different but not a massive difference in balance required.
Point is - skis take a bit of work to learn the balancing act and get one that *really* suits your abilities ! Read up and practice technique which will help a lot.

Yeah and what about waveski's... looks like heaps of fun for marginal conditions

Yeah but for the ease off transport the ski was a better choyce. As for stability and instant fun google Epic v 8. You simply can't go wrong and I was faster in the V8 than in my narrower Stellar.

There is an Outrigger Canoe club here in Melbourne that regularly train in the city on the Yarra river and I heard from a friend that they were moving on one of the clubs OC1's that wasn't being used and I was lucky to be able to buy it.. They are a bit hard to come by but if you keep looking they do come up every now and then.

Wave skis look fun but they are a pretty rare site in The States. Even surf kayaks are an uncommon site.

I have been SUPing for about 10 years now, both surfing and downwinding. About 3 years ago bought an OC1 when all the other guys were starting to get into foils. Best thing I have done, much better than a SUP for downwinding due to speed, control and ability to link runners. The paddle stroke is similar to SUP and they complement each other. I have found that canoe paddling actually improves your SUP technique. Additionally, if you are older like me it is much easier on your legs during very long downwind runs. I have a Kai Waa Ares which is one of the best surfing boats out there and I would highly recommend them. Be great to include OC1 on this site.

OC1 is great for when it is too windy to stand up.
Negateive I have found is you can flip them pretty easily and it's not that easy to get back on.
Your leg rope is wrapped around the hull and if you have an older one like mine the ama becomes detached from the canoe because they have ****ty friction fittings.
But great fun in small surf and much more versatile than sup

I probably wouldn't use them in actual surf. Just bay or ocean paddling close to the shore.

The comments that oc1 is relaxing are spot on - it's nice to just tap along in dead calm water and autumn is perfect in Melbourne. I love my volare and always prefer to paddle it for long sessions rather than sup.

Yep Oc1 are great for flat water training cross training for sup as it is easy on the knees and the most fun for downwinding
The green Kahekai in Nozzas photo is mine it is great for a bigger paddler and unlike Nozzas the amas don't release when you least expect it.
Puhekea make a great canoe in good condition
Mine is full carbon
They are really light I can lift mine one arm which makes them great to carry from beach to car
I am getting another soon and will sell mine $4,500
Not sure where else I would put it on this site to sell that it would be found
If interested PM me
