I have a 8'11" x 30" x 4" custom surf SUP. It looks like an overgrown, pintail shortboard. Basically it's kind of narrow at both ends. Apart from the pintail it looks very similar to a Naish Hokua or a Starboard Pro board.

All of the SUP bags available assumed SUPs are fat and roundy at the ends. As a result, I get all this sloppy fabric. It takes up too much space inside the car (if I'm just nipping down for a surf), or bangs on the roof if I'm going on a road trip.

I am exchanging emails with Surfaids in Byron and I expect I will be able to get a stretchy to fit, or a custom fit day bag.

It shouldn't be that hard. The board is the same shape as most of the surf SUPs on the market. Why can't I just buy one that fits? What do you guys do for surf SUP board bags?

I went surf aids bags for my custom sups, great to deal with, couple of days turn around and cheaper than off the shelf

Get some shock cord and tie it around the bag. This takes up the excess fabric and stops it flapping on the car roof.

I've got 3 custom bags from them, all made to measurements I gave them and no real issues so far. I'd suggest you give them info on where and how many grab/carry handles you want. First bag came with 3 and was a pleasure, next bag only came with 1 and it's on the wrong side (I load from driver's side), which sometimes makes it a little tricky to pull off the roof.

You could also buy an off-the-shelf bag and take it to an upholsterer or better yet, a sail maker and they should be able to cut it to shape and re-sew it... Not the cheapest option admittedly...

Another good custom option is Balin, they made me a bag a few months ago and it's a perfect fit for a difficult board. Plus they were a proper pleasure to deal with!

So I created a new bag for Flying Objects that are more fitted to Surf SUP's. Unfortunately these are just going through production and won't arrive in Oz till late September.
They have a side wall with cinch straps that will allow for boards to be setup as either Quads or Thrusters and still fit in the bag.

Yes, side cinch straps perfect, if they're at a reasonable price you have one sold right here

Side wall designs are more complex in build and I did not want to compromise our usual build quality, so this is the best pricing I could do.


Below is a side view, the cinch strap over the zip is a side release buckle for ease of unzipping. All the other cinch straps use ladder lock buckles.
This is my 2017 Starboard Pro with Quad fins fitted.

I realise your board is 30" wide, however we normally allow a small tolerance. Also with a side wall some extra width can be accommodated, so this may end up fitting your board. Only real way to tell is obviously by doing a physical test, hopefully one of the local shops can help you out with that if you are still in the market when they arrive.

Thanks for the info. The Flying Objects bag looks good and I've had them before. Not sure I want to wait until late September/October.

At the moment a custom bag from Surfaids is looking to be a good option. Quite a bit cheaper than other bags, and they give the right answers to questions, and that's a good thing.

My custom bag arrived from Surfaids today. Very good value. Great service. Very pleased.

The 5mm day bag is very basic compared to some other bags, but it is perfect for the job of protecting the board from casual damage, and, more importantly, protecting the interior of my car from the board.

Best custom bag maker in the US--not sure if (and for what cost) they ship overseas.

Only bad is they take 4 weeks to make the bag, and need pretty detailed measurements, which can only be taken direct from the actual board.

so ive bought beautiful new boards, and then had to wait, while being very careful with the board, for a month til the bag arrives

id feel like a fool if i dinged the brand new board, while transporting, while waiting for the bag!

but the bags are unarguably the best over here.
