Hi,

I'm wondering what are the best covers for boards on top of cars? The flying objects look the best and I've heard good things about them but they are dark, wouldn't they get hotter in the sun than the Balin that have the shiny surface?

Also, for anyone who uses the Lockrak system to tie the boards down do you still feel safe when the boards have covers on when parked overnight? I'd be worried that the covers could provide some wiggle room that would allow the boards to be slid off.

Thanks

Never bother with a cover, I believe board gets hotter with a cover than without. Have travelled many 000,s of k's with boards in lock racks, never used cover, often in very hot conditions. No damage to boards. Having said that I stand to be corrected.

Can't imagine even if you use a cover, that boards could be removed from lock racks.

I remember seeing a post awhile ago where a bloke on here had his deep custom stolen from a rack. They just ground the arm off and took off with the board.

I swear by board socks as someone that has multiple matt black boards in WA. Mind you Only delamination I've had was using Lockracks and leaving a car on the roof whilst at work......
I had a board stolen (that post was likely mine). Someone either grinding or maybe using some bolt cutters to get into the metal arm and then bending it back and forwards till it snapped.

That being said I'd still highly recommend them and have them on my car (faster, easier, still more secure then straps any day).

Great info. Thanks.

LBax do you think you would have had the delamination had you used a board bag instead of a sock? I plan on chucking the boards on top of the car and leaving them there for four weeks in the sun and trying to find a fool proof method. I like the idea of the convenience of a sock.

Cheers

I'm definitely a fan of lockrack, that being said I don't believe they are more or less secure than lockable anything. If someone wants to steal they will. They are definitely easier, faster and more convenient than straps. As far as a board bag goes, I use a flying objects mainly so I can stuff my paddles and wetties in there, because there's no tie down they don't get crushed.
I have thought at times this is going to get sooo hot but have mostly managed to keep out of direct sun. Things you can do to minimise risk is undo zip as far as possible and place a white sheet over board and rack, basically a little tent. Think beach sun protection cabana

Surfaids in bryon bay do custom covers in white that are very good value and secure your boards with "kanulock" straps.

The socks are good, but they do soak up a lot of water if it rains.

I have a 'Thule SUP Taxi'. ( I'm sure that's what it's called.) Awesome bit of kit. Easy to use and very secure. They definitely won't be wiggling your SUP out of that. Got mine used on Gumtree. Bit pricey new I think but quality. 2 boards with covers no problem.
