Does anyone known much about the Sunova sp25 generation sup sup boards?
I'm wondering weather to go an 8'8 or 8'11 as my next board for soft waves.
I'm an intermediate rider, 55 yo, 95kg About 5'9 in height.

At 95kg you Guild factors on the SP25
8'8 x 31.3 @ 138 L ----Guild Factor = 1.48
8'11 x 32.25 @ 150 L --Guild Factor = 1.61

I have 3 SP25's
8'11 x 32.25 @ 150 L ---- my weight when I got it 102kg ----- G/F = 1.47
8'8 x 31.3 @ 138 l ---- weight now 98kg ----- G/F = 1.41

It was so easy and fun that I ordered one, just to have around for the super wonky or wetsuit days
9'5 x 34 @ 177 L ------ G/F = off the chartsat 1.8

My 8'11 is super stable and probably the board that I surf best.
I love it so much that I got the 8'8 because there really is a lot of difference at each size, and I really want to see what I can do on the smaller board.

My 8'8 is quite a bit smaller than my 8'11 and looks/feels totally amazing.

Here is a picture of my buddy who is a 91kg rider with his new 8'8 SP25
He reported that it was comfortable in some wonk in a full wetsuit.
He is blown away how well it surfs and how fast it is.
He's a very good surfer.


Both my cars are broken down at the moment and all my SUPs are in my Cargo trailer 10 miles away, so I can't get any side by side pics of my 8'11 and 8'8 until I am mobil again.
As soon as I am mobil again I will do a paddle/stability comparison and post here.

I'm the one in the pic with the 8'8. I'm pretty much the same weight as you. I'm 6'0 tall. The board is pretty stable. My first sesh on it was in waist to chest high waves with light onshore winds that increased as the session went on. It handled the textured pretty good.

The board is fast, loose, and light. It catches waves easy. It is was so loose and light that I'm going to put on Large thruster fins and take out my Med Thruster fins.

Once I get more waves on it I will update you how it goes as the waves have not been that great here.
I also feel it will be able to handle bigger surf. I plan on using it in big NJ winter days.

Rick, SupTheCreek, was a huge help for me. He knows his boards. He know Sunovas. His reviews are spot on. He is a regular surfer like us that gives honest reviews in honest waves. He was very patient with me. The nicest humble guy in the world.

You will love the SP25. I will keep you posted as I get more waves under my belt.

Also a few pics on my older sup which is a Quatro GLide. The SP25 is almost as stable as the Glide but more high performance and actually catches waves easier. I cant wait to try the SP25 in waves like this.

STC - Can you ride SP25 at a lower GF like folks often do on other small wave boards, or is it similarly unstable to any board with that pulled in sort of outline? Was curious cause some low volume SP boards were on craigslist

The pointy nose is a factor for sure, but the ample standing area provides a solid stability for length.
The GenRation SP25 is fairly high volume board because it was designed to give Sean Poynter a paddling edge over the competition on the APP World Tour. He floats at his ankles while many pros are sunk to their thighs.

On the SP25, the extra volume is packed between the handle and the side bites, so while it floats well, the nose is super easy to snap around.
The biggest issue I have on my 8'11 is when paddling for a wave, I tend to drive hard while placing all my weight on my front foot.... that will sometimes sink the very pointy nose and dump me. I need to keep my weight back more and keep my nose up as I drop in.
Outside that, it is very solid on the water for a performance board.

It has been rainy and windy since I got my 8'8 SP25, so have not been on it yet. Also waiting on a deck pad.

Still wetsuit weather on Cape Cod (11c when I woke up), so I will paddle flat-water today on the 8'8 and the 8'11, to do a first glance stability/float comparison
I will see if the 8'8 will be a "wetsuit board" for me. The 8'11 is fine in a wetsuit.

I will say that for only 3" difference in length, there is quite a bit of difference between them when comparing tail thickness and overall feel. I am chomping at the bit to get on this 8'8 and see how it feels!

Which size of the Glide did you have?

8'6 Glide.
The Glide is a super fun board. Easy to surf. I have it in the AST material bc it was a better cost point for me. I would love to try this board in light material. I used the Glide in 6" waves all the way up to 6-8' hollow NJ winter waves. It went pretty well in bigger surf.
Funny thing with the Glide it works well with the AM Med fin.

I wanted a bit more high performance so went the SP25. When I sup I don't want a board that sits underwater. I like to stand all the time. To me, those smaller boards take the advantage of the SUP. I love the SUP for the obvious reasons from seeing sets far away, catching 5 to 1 waves to prone, longer waves, and just more fun. Paddling 20 blocks to find my own peaks with no one around.

I was a shortboarder for 30 years that would not even longboard. The first time on a sup, I was hooked. The fun factor was silly.

I'm looking to add a longboard Sup to my quiver.

Update on the SP25- waves yesterday thigh to maybe waist high. Soft, slow but clean and glassy.
Had the AM Large Thruster fins in. The board went insane. Those fins gave the board more drive and flow. The board goes so well in weak summer surf. I was doing turns and catching everything. I was surprised how well it went in small mushy surf.

Hopefully, we get a bit more swell next week. My big test on a board and fins is surfing on my backside. I love surfing on my backside more than my front side. Surfing on my backside is the true test how a board or fins work.

I also have the Glide 8'6, but in Pro Construction, 7,8 kg.
Nice board, stable for my 93 kg, but not the most radical one for sure.

Just wanted to give one more update on the SP25 because we had better waves.

Conditions were 3-5' clean with offshore winds. Shoulder to head with a few plus sets.
The board is went so well. It is so fast and loose but has great drive. I was able to wrap turns. Again, it catches waves easy. I had a someone on the beach comment to me that it looked like I was surfing on a shortboard.

It is a solid board in a wide range of conditions. It is stable and just such a fun board. I highly recommend.

Only one session on my new SP but I would say my first impression is as you describe!

Great feed back every one. Thanks again. Ive managed to find a 8'8 sp25 at a realistic price so Ive snapped it up.

What fin set up are you all running on the SP?

Thruster. AM Large. Works best for me. Fast and loose with good drive.

First I tried with AM Med and it was too loose.

I tried as a quad but felt sticky. I'm not a quad guy. I love thrusters. That top to bottom feel especially on my backside.

I got the 8'8 and a set of large AM2 set of fins.

The only fins I am using in my 8'8 SP25 are Quobba Mixed Thruster set in Carbon Glass
large sides with slightly shorter center.
they really liven up my boards.

Love the genuine feed back and comments in this thread.

I have a 8"3 Placid and i love it, especially when it is a bit wonky and bumpy. I have a JL 8"1 for the glassy mornings.

I would love something that is near as stable as my Placid but with a bit more get up and go in it.

For the brains trusts: would the SP25 (115ltr) be the board for this.
