No need for R&D though the tech is ready made and sold by Carbon Compact:

Blue Planet are already in talks.
Sunova has exclusive deal on the race boards for the near future though. But surf and sup surf are open to all.
Personally I have a sup long board by Carbon Compact and that stuff works. Way better than my SIC 2 piece board.
