Hey guys, I checked out anOcean & Earth 8ft SUP leash. It claims to be the world's strongest. But then its says for waves up to 3ft. Lol! Does that mean anything over it will break? Or does it mean to get a longer one in bigger waves?

The premium Ocean Earth leash? They list it as up to 11' , which would still be conservative to cover themselves. Ive considered getting one of the same length... or a FCS "Big Wave" leash (8mm) .... however, I got a free ION leash last year with a board I bought from NN - 9' x 8mm... and its super strong and thick, so stick with that if Im worried about bigger waves. I snapped 3 leashes on my 9-6 BM in the last year. Needless to say i was sick of buying the things! So i went back to basics (actually did it as a goof). I went to Bunnings, bought 20m of cheap, colorful 9mm nylon cord. I put a swivel at the board end and drilled a hole through the leash attachment point of my knee strap and tied Bowlines on both ends. I fully expected that i would be tripping over it and getting tangled in a ropey mess! Well surprise surprise, when it gets wet it trails straight behind. It sits flat on the deck with no loops to trip over. six months later and I am still on my first one I love it! And I have enough rope for 6 more. I do take a bit of ribbing on the beach but I am at an age that I don't worry about that.

Whoa!!!! Some of your ideas are quite radical!! Lol!!!! But if it works, why not! Lol!!
Might check out the Balin, O&E & the popular brands so far. Thanks for info guys.

I got a Lexie leash off eBay a year ago for $30 (including postage) and it has been holding very solid for the last year, has taken a few solid beatings too!!

Lexie leash are an Aussie small business based on the east coast so it's good to shop local

Firstly I am not advocating this practice, but it is not rocket science. $150 in snapped leashes was too much. I have used this set up for 5 months while learning to SUP finless. I reckon that is equivalent to about 5 years of very out of control wipeouts. I still have both feet, so far.

can't believe that rope hasn't cut through the board.

FCS iv never snapped one, even got wrapped around the reef in the Mentawais and it just stretched but didnt break even when rubbing against coral !that was a 7' regular, but i usualy use a 6' comp and even then i use that when its solid and still to this day never have broken one

So far...

Do you get rope burn as the board gets dragged away with the rope half wrapped around your hand or ankle? I know you have been through some expense with broken leg ropes, but that really looks like a disaster waiting to happen...

2 years and no stretch

No surprisingly, also there is none of the painful urethane thwang you get with normal leashes. It only stretches about a meter so it it has saved a few friends during those cleanup sets we all experience in the west. I appreciate all the concern and the disaster scenarios Imagined by everyone, but like I said, 5 months, heaps of wipeouts and no injuries or broken leashes. maybe I should have added to my first post "dont try this at home". Im pretty relaxed about it. Not trying to start a movement.

After breaking one leash and not trusting the next, I finally bought a Surf Coast Accessories "Magnum" SUP leash. It's locally made in Victoria, all hand tied and heavy duty. Great Aussie product rather than an import!

Shapers make a 8mm leg rope and i last havnt snapped one yet and they have been tested in 8ft plus reef break and all other conditions
