looking at the Mingos vid got my thinking about stroke. I reckon mine sucks and could do with a massive improvement.

Is there anywhere/one in Aus or specifically Sydney that provides proper advice/coaching one on one to get it working properly or fine tune?

In my humble opinion the investment of some time a bit of money in having some one on one coaching is vital.

I am an older guy, 61, but I love to paddle and I love to paddle long distance if I can.

A couple of years ago I booked some time with Pete Dorries when he was on the Sunshine Coast. I didn't want to be part of a group and wanted some specific points targeted.

Suffice to say, he taught me some strokes to target long distance with minimum tiredness and economy of stroke. I have kept up his pointers and whilst I am no world beater can paddle as far a I want with comfort.

If you are considering it I say do it! Find a reputable and experienced coach and get some pointers to suit what you do.

You won't regret it.

This is not a paid advertisement nor am I associated with any group.

Good luck.

ET.

James Casey and Scott Hardiman ran a race training course on Saturday morning at JPP this past weekend, by all accounts it was awesome. I couldn't make it due to other commitments but when i saw James on Sunday i broached the subject of a repeat course if there were numbers and i'm pretty sure he'd/they'd be keen...

I'm pretty sure Jacy and JPP also does some coaching.

Hi, I agree with ET! I had a lesson with Pete Dorres and got so much out of the session. He is very detailed in his coaching and technique. I suggest you either find a local SUP guru or travel to see Pete.

Just had the ultimate paddle clinic weekend. On Saturday I attended the James Casey/Scott Hardiman clinic at Jamieson Park then on the Sunday the Kelly Margetts clinic at Balmoral that Balmoral Paddlesurf had organised. Then I was able to put it into action this week as Sam Parker put the Clontarf training group through its paces.

Definitely worthwhile getting some instruction. While there are individual differences in the pros' techniques, the fundamentals are the same in developing the most efficient stroke - consistently getting the most out of each phase of the stroke. It highligts the areas you need to work on and helps you develop the stroke that works for you.

While I can see the benefit of one-on-one training, don't discount the advantages of a small group clinic. Everyone is really supportive and help to push you - for example, practice race starts together or compete for buoy turns. I also found that in the moments when you didn't have the coach's direct attention, you could concentrate on putting it into practice. Plus everyone got to share the stoke.

Try to get a One-on-One with Scott Hardiman. You want to just learn the stroke first. having the instructor concentrate only on you is a big advantage. Take a mate if it helps to share the costs.
It was only two years ago I did a personal session with Scott and James together. And you could see the improvement in them instantaneously.
Now Scott has the personal training experience behind him so can show you how to correct not just 'here is how you do it'.
Cheers

Himate, Come join our Tuesday and Thursday morning training group.
Always find time for tips and advice where needed in those.
More than that I'd get in touch with James or Scott. Switched on guys.

I highly recommend Pete Dorries, I traveled to the Gold Coast and did some private coaching and trained with the squad, I learnt a heap, no more lower back issues and I now have a much better catch.

My Paddling has improved a heap.

Pete as a Youtube Channel you might get some tips from:

The great thing with the training groups on the Northern Beaches is that they are free for members of the Sydney Paddle Surfing Club. 3 great locations, all following a similar programme and operating under the same umbrella. Cost - $15 non club members.
