I have a 2014/15 Starboard Widepoint in 8.5.... looking to upgrade. I have found a new 2018 8.5 Carbon Widepoint but also looking at other alternatives... maybe a Smik Hipter 8.10 or 8.6... still like width of widepoint but guessing technology and design has moved on and I could probably get something a bit more responsive in the waves wit similar width and length?.... or not????

I can only give you my perspective. I went from a Widepoint to Sunova Skate then to Sunova Speeed and Creek. I think the widepoint you are on is about 125 litres and 32" wide?? You will see a huge improvement in performance and a bit of a balance learning curve by dropping down to a high performance narrower board in the 29-30" width range and staying around 8'5" in length. I think if you provide a bit more information about what you are looking for in your "upgrade" and a bit of information about your surfing goals there are a lot of very experienced SUP surfers on this forum that will help you out with choosing your next board. Have fun, I don't think you can go too far wrong. There are just so many great boards out there in the size range you are looking at.

Thanks Bob. I'm only an intermediate rider, looking for something to turn more on a wave, I'm also looking at getting a longboard sup as well to mimic the longboard riding I'm unable to do due to not being able to pop with my back injury.

You and I appear to be on similar journeys. I have been waiting for about a year now for delivery of a new "long board" Sup . Containers have not been easy to come by for the distributor. Hopefully by the spring here the 9' x 30" Sunova Revolution will arrive. I think if your goal is to improve performance you will need to drop down from the 32" width that you are now comfortable on. I am sort of blathering on here and not giving any specific advice because there are much more knowledgeable surfers here on the forum that I am hoping will chime in. One of the obvious pieces of advice that is perhaps a bit trite is "demo if you can". That really is only partially helpful I believe in finding a board that you don't hate. What you want to find is a board that you love to take out and every time you look at the surf conditions you find an excuse to take that board out. Finding that board will usually take some time on the water with it because the first few times you take it out you will think "What was I thinking when I ordered this board" and then after a few sessions the magic starts to happen.

Similar size but more performance? How about the new Smik Spitfire 8'8. Finer rails, performance shape and full carbon. Fantastic board.
