Snapped 4 leashes in a year with a 145lt board I'm thinking there must be better leashes out there. Tried a couple of brands and they all snap in various spots along the length, last one just pulled out!

Like to get some opinion on what is the best leash for surfing in decent waves?

New Balin's are supposed to be brilliant. I Have had a DaKine 8 footer 10MM (I think) looks thick. It has been perfect for 8 months. Always take it off the board straight away and wash it in fresh water. I Checked all the swiv els on Saturday after a heavy session everything seems OK. Do not wrap around the fins.

I have used the O & E sup leg rope in waves to triple overhead with no dramas
Albeit one leg is now a bit longer than the other.

I always use an 8 foot Creatures leash but having said that I do go through a few each year. I bought a 10 foot FCS leash years ago for my wifes longer board and granted it doesn't get as hard a use but it is in perfect condition. No frayed material and the cord is like new.

Am pathetically repetitive........always bleat on about creatures of leisure 10' and 12'
Maybe the 12' wraps around ones neck wrists and ankles more than the 10'........but the 12' that I am using at the moment might have a bit more stretch to avoid fin cuts (so far anyway)
On the other hand you see SUP people surfing mavericks with 15' leashes & waist tethering points
If the surf is really big it can seem quite sophisticated to have a brand new leggie you can have an absurd amount of trust in

Look no further than the Balin Storm leg rope , just pick one up and compare it to anything else you can find and it will sell itself. It is the Mac Truck of leg ropes.

+2 for the Balin. I'm surprised my leash plug is still there - or my foot hasn't popped off! Tried & tested the Balin over the past few months & still going strong.

Used most brands of leashes for sup and longboarding, but got a few balin storm leashes couple of months ago and they have everything else beat. Got a 7 ft on my 9'2" and an 8 ft on my 10'2 and both have stood up to decent size surf without a worry + they don't appear to have stretched too much from original length even after dragging me till I was sucking down water after a good wipeout.

only prob I've had with COL is fin cuts.......but who would be silly enuff to paddle out in big surf without giving your leggie a decent look at for possible problems

At town beach in giz when its big its always a bonus if you can manage to pop up and get a breath before the next wave hits you......extra bonus if your board still attached to legrope.....cant imagine changing from COL to another "brand"

I bought a 12ft Fanatic leash with my new SUP and it lasted about an hour in small surf. Very poor quality control and manufacturing. The design was pretty suspect too. The join between the leash and the cuff fell apart. I'm lucky I didn't lose my new SUP on the rocks or hurt someone.

I got a refund and looking at an O&E. Can't tell the difference between these two though except the price;

Maybe they think SUPpers have more cash ;)

I only buy now Creatures of Leisure or O&E ONE leashes.
Their outstanding quality (no sharp edges on the connection of the cord to the fittings) also mean that you can use the "comp" versions (reduced diameter) in everyday waves, for a near-leashless feeling.

Had 2 creatures out reef that have failed. Both times on the the screw in the swivel, that connects leash to velcro ankle band....

because there are no bolts on either end, it just rips the screw out,, as pic on original post... think some bolts would help or make the swivel out of metal rather than plastic ??

i suppose some thing has to give on the big waves.. goes to show how strong the actual leash materiel is!!

I have been through 3 leashes in 4 weeks. Snapped 2 dakine's at the point where the leash goes into swivel section, both board end. Put a brand new one last week it lasted 3 hours in about 5ft with a 8ft2 SUP. I Have used a creatures 10mm for past 2 years but sliced it on coral, just got a new creatures 8mm.

XM leggies from the US have been good to me. I'd like to support the local makers but a) they seem really expensive and b) the ones I have had have snapped in 2-4ft surf. Had a 10' XM on for about a year with no probs and have just changed it in case (watched my beloved get washed up the rocks at rincon one day and once is enough). The XMs are about $25 each, and worth checking out.

I should say that's the power clip straight leggies - the coil ones give me the sh1ts.

Have been using Creatures 8ft Teahupoo leashes for about 3 years with no snapping issues. I do replace them every 6 - 12 months though, just to be sure.

Seen in a shop yesterday some "Komunity" leashes that are actually O&E ONE leashes (including the mold ridge along the cord) repackaged under another brand name (Kelly Slater's?). Good to know if you can't find O&E ONEs in your shops.

My thoughts on the trouble that we have with leashes is it is more of a technique problem than the leash strength.

If you dive off under a closeout and swim strongly against the waves pull, you put a large amount of pressure on ALL parts of the leash.

What I do now, is not swim strongly underwater at first, but go with the wave for a bit as the board is grabbed by the whitewater.
What happens then is you pick up speed in the same direction and the pull on the rope eases.

Thats when I start to swim strongly out of the waves pull. This techniuqe works equally well when you fall/bail on a wave.

Go the squid - good quality at a great price. I've had one for a year now with no break, supping most days around Torquay.

Gotta second the squid, go the 5 metre + rated, haven't heard of anyone breaking one yet........just jinxed myself surely.

Cheap and strong plus they post them out to you and that chick on the home page aint bad either.
