Yeah, SUPMaori's not far wrong there...I'm a self-confessed board junkie & 2 tried & tested shapes are the Speeed & Acid
SUPMaori has pretty much nailed it with his summary...a few things to add:
- for larger model Speeed's, the main challenge is getting your back foot over the fins to turn the board effectively (not an issue with the smaller models e.g. the 7'8 Speeed is pretty much my only board where I regularly feel my back foot in contact with the stomper)
- because of the outline curve of the Acid vs the parallel rails of the Speeed, the Acid is at home going vertical whereas aggressive turns on larger model Speeed's can look & feel a bit laboured & forced...IMO
- my main challenge on larger model Speeed's in decent size surf is not to out-run the wave e.g. because it's got speed to burn, it's easy to race ahead of the wave vs the Acid where it's easier to wash off speed & surf more critical parts of the wave
- the Acid has decent lateral stability vs the Speeed which has good lateral + front & back stability i.e. it's a different kind of stability (litre-for-litre, I personally don't think the Speeed is a lot more stable vs the Acid because it's a narrower shape)
- I prefer the Acid in powerful bowly beach breaks whereas the Speeed is a dream on open faces where you can lay some carving turns (that being said, the smaller Speeed's also rip in beach breaks....check out some of Marty & Casso's footage)
If you held a gun to my head, I would choose the Acid over the Speeed but, the most important thing is matching a board to your local conditions + your skill level e.g. the Speeed is an easier board to progress on. As a 2 board quiver, they are great options because they both offer something quite different.
