Paddle boards are expensive items. So I use expanded car rule.
Local hard boards or easily attained overseas boards, Naish, Starboard etc. New 100 percent retail
One time use in water. Less 20-30 percent.
First year of age. another 10 percent. Then decreasing by 10 percent a year. 5 year old good condition board without repairs or faded colours still retain 50-60 percent of their original value.
After 5 years the boards actually regain some of their value as they are now scarce and usually very well looked after. 2-5 percent per year increase in last years price up and sometimes over original price over an extended period. More for limited or race editions.

Harder to get models, blue planet, imagine etc. Are harder to value and often can maintain higher prices due to scarcity in the country.
Boards drop 5-10 percent per year and still hold value when not being used.
As a guide about half of the depreciation value of local boards and about 2 to 4 times the appreciation value after five years.

Inflatables are harder to value as they can depreciate differently over time.

Depends how quick you want to sell and if it is a "known" brand and sort after model. Over 2 years old and usual wear and tear about 50% of full retail generally will sell pretty quick. Eg I have a Sunova 8 10 Speeed that is about 2 years old and full retail is $2099 so if I wanted to sell it quickly I would price it at about $1100. More if I was in no hurry. It has heal dents and a few chips on the rails but water tight.

Also, certain developments were made over the years that many buyers are aware of that may cause a jump in a brands value in the space of one year.
These things may help your board to retain value....
eg
change from standard 'slot' handles, to the reach in 'ledge' handles (much easier to carry the board especially for smaller people)
-most brands changed to ledge from about 2014 onwards.
eg Fanatics 2013 and before = slot
Fanatics 2014 and after = ledge

models with a variety of fin configurations have wider appeal
-can change from thruster to quad set ups

Rail tape installed from new??

boards with the windsurfing option are still worth dual advertising (on the windsurfing by/sell)

+ any Fin upgrades you may have made

Customs tend to sell for a lot less than production models. Also, smaller boards have a smaller market so a 2 year old 10 foot (beginner board) will sell for a better rate than a 2 year old 7'8 x 27 (expert) board.

Easiest and most accurate way is to log onto Seabreeze, Buy & sell, and look for something of a similar age, size, brand etc etc etc then you have a direct comparison.

seriously!I cant sell a board to save my life at the moment. Got a 8'5 starboard pro in Starlight construction, its been for sale at $850 for 2 months - ZERO nibbles (that's like 35-40% of original value) - its a 2017! looks like i'll be price dropping again to actually move it...

People are always asking me that question...
I say there are 2 answers:
1 - The price you WANT to get
2 - The price where it will sell

I look at the market, then price lower.
Having a board that is hard to find or in demand.... you can start higher and see if someone is really looking for it.

Back in 2014, I sold a brand new board.... used 4 short sessions (I hated it)
Bought for $1,800 ..... sold immediately for $1,000 3 weeks later, cuz I needed the cash to buy a board I could ride.

Pricing has a LOT to do with your location as well.

Retailers make it hard too tho, some 4K boards sell on sale for 2k a year later as demos, so a one year old board you paid 4K for is now worth less than half!....honestly 4K for a new carbon board is having a lend, 2k should pull them all up....

A board that you no longer want is only worth what another person is willing to pay. How much you paid for it is irrelavent as is the price of all the other boards not yet sold. The price of boards that have recently sold are far more realistic indicators of what someone might pay you.

Interesting you don't see a lot of "wanted" adds. From the demand side, I'm looking for low volume boards in the SW of WA. Condition not so important, price sensitive
