Yes, his choice of lines is impressive.

Note also his perfect takeoff technique...
but something the average SUPer should not try to imitate. Mastering balance and paddle efficiency in a true surfing position is insanely hard, although he makes it appear effortless!

I noticed before on his other puerto videos how strong and fast a paddler he is and that he can get in early and deeper than the surfers. That was my dream initially to be able to paddle a small board really fast and it was a lot of fun to try but anything big or difficult has me reaching for the old 8'4. I don't think the conditions were that good for them at pipeline this year they always seem to,run the sup heats in the worst parts of the day. Anyway he didn't win, but he definitely rides the best barrels every year.

You can, but do it in fencing position (shoulder facing forward).
You will be super-efficient in frontside AND backside (something too had with a pure surfing position).
Losing the versatility of switching paddling sides during takeoff to adapt to the wave is too big a drawback for me in fickle beachbreaks.

In his case, with his heavy late drops, I guess he does not want even the small position change at the end of the takeoff between fencing and surfing stance.

He's a total badass. I feel like the sport really needs more great surfers like Sebastian who also make compelling content like this.

What happened to Dogman and Jackson Close?

They don't seem to make any content any more.

Rick (SupTheCreek) is still rocking it and his videos are awesome and super-relatable but where's the new generation?

I think your paddling stance can be board and wave dependent. In this case I see him having his weight forward to catch the wave and then he adjusts his back foot for the drop. On that small a board I doubt he has many options for stance other than the most stable spot. I really like keeping the idea of your "fencing" stance in mind because it encourages me to get lower when paddling for a wave, but the reality for me on my smaller boards you can't spread your feet too far apart and still balance lengthwise on the sweet spot just like on a narrow board if your feet are too wide it make it harder to control side to side rocking.

True,

This is why i use the image of using the rear leg as a bike kickstand.
You keep your weight on the front foot, and extend your "bike kickstand" towards the tail pad to resist the push during the takeoff, not while paddling around. Just like you don't ride a bike with the kickstand out.

And the steeper the wave, the longer the kickstand, the farthest aft the rear foot.

Same!! ..Dogman was also exceptional.the whole Deep gig was always worth a watch,it has been very quiet since Jackson had an elbow problem? I hope al is well there.as far as Dogman goes anyone's guess, but I'm sure there will be waves and music in there somewhere The Deep website is still down,or not to focused on surf sup ?..again I hope all is ok with Simon,as I thought he was exceptional at what he did ..re surf .longboard sup,who wouldn't want to see an inform Jackson Close at the next Bali longboard comp.????

Dolphin is long gone . Simon sold out ages ago and now all production has been sent overseas.

Here is a couple of videos from my vault of the Jackson Close and the boys plus web paid the Dogman to his home break at Minnie Water.
