Anywhere on the river is a good place to start to learn. How about Garvey park, then you can make it a family affair.

you could also sup on an inflatable from bells Rapids, or get used to the surf south of Cottesloe at Dutch inn.

when in the surf make sure you don't have any swimmers close buy, when you fall off your sup goes a long way on the leash!

have fun!

Welcome SJ, you know one of the best things about SUPping is that you can paddle just about anywhere.

Think about what you want to achieve, what you want to see, who you want to do it with and pick a spot. WA is full of all sorts of places to give it a shot.

If you are unsure pick somewhere quite with a minimum of chop, as you progress get more adventuress.

Always think about your safety and in particular the safety of those around you.

SUP's are big, hard and can be heavy.

Have fun.

I live in Bassendean and while I try to get to the surf and the odd downwinder as much as possible I probably spend 70% of my time on the river, generally paddle from Garvey Park as I am a member of Ascot Kayak Club and store my board there and feel more comfortable parking my car there than some other reserves but there are heaps of other good starting points with Sandy Beach Reserve, Fishmarket Reserve, Point Reserve and Pickering Park probably being the best. I have paddled kayak up that way since the late 70's and the whole stretch of river all the way up to All Saints church ~8km or so upstream of Middleswan Road is paddle able on a SUP and often more interesting than the lower reaches, it's often easier to get away from the wind the higher up you go although with some wind directions the river can funnel a bit. BTW make sure you always start your paddle into the wind as if it does start to funnel up the river valley it can be a very hard paddle back to your starting point.
