What pre-requisets are there. Don't you need to have an ASI surf instructor quality first.

Will you be running other courses later in the year/ early next year? (I've just committed to doing my SLSA bronze medallion over the next few month).

"Enclosed Flat Water" can be assessed at the course, SRC & 1st aid we can also help if required. 1st aid courses we run 7 days a week, takes a day and costs $110. I am a SLS examiner and can tee you up with a SRC course, or if we have enough candidates, we can run one in house.

Yes I plan to run another one after the new year provided there is an interest. Your SLS would prob be training in the wkends/evenings? Our course will be on weekedays, 2 solid days to get your level 1. At this stage we are thinking of November 8/9, Monday & Tuesday. We have accommodation too if required, right on the water.

On the gold coast there is only one or two ASI run surf schools I believe (could be wrong) and all the rest of the surf schools are surfing aust/qld qualified. I believe then, that with the ASI qual' you could probably be employed by those school on the coast or start up your own business - so long as you had the appropriate insurance and state govt/local govt permits.
Of course so long as you have the appropriate insurance and any relevant council/govt permits then you don't need to have any surf/sup instructor qualification to run an instructional business.

are ASI affiliated with Surfing QLD or Surfing AUS. if not who are they to say who is an instructor?

are they a private company....kinda like those PT instructor business that use the word Australia in there name to make it sound offical like it could have something to do with the AIS etc

unless you own a school or business etc, the money instructing is rubbish and you have to pay a reasonable amount first up and keep doing accreditation courses that cost more money that really leaves you with bu##er all of an income. just like working in a gym- the pay's cr## and they(coarse providers and industry) then like to keep taking from your low income.the play is you get to call yourself an 'instructor'

True Lacey, it is crap pay (for privately run business), but I don't mind sharing my knowledge and showing people a great activity, whilst getting paid to stay on the water. Its not all that bad its just how you look at it I guess and if you teach SUP whilst working for the Queensland Government the pay is pretty good, just like most public servents.

By the way guy's ASI and Surfing Australia offer SUP Quals, it just depends on who you want to allign yourself with. Mitcho had a word in the ASI instructor qual from what I heard were as with the Surf Aus I've got an idea who but i don't want to say unless I'm wrong. Anyway guys unless it is accreditted with the Australian training body you are just really buying into someones grand scheme of make more money out of you.

it's a good lifestyle /job for sure. if you can get the 'gov work' that would be the best. i'm just putting it out there that it's not as glamous as it seems. from what i've seen you only get paid for the lesson, not the setting up, the packing up and then washing all the rashies, wetsuits etc.a 2hr lesson can be 4 to 5 hrs of your time depending on numbers/gear out- 2 hr lesson= maybe $40 to $50 and that could be it for the whole day- work out how much your getting then. winter can be dead for lessons- no income. you also have to remember you are 'responsible' for those people which can be 15 or so people out in the water, one of the most uncontrolable arena's you could have. at the end of the day, surf,gym, ski etc setups and industries are always looking for people because people are always leaving a very responsible, but poor paying jobs. the love of what you do only goes so far

PT Noosa only has 1 Permit for the river and between the two groins on the main beach.

There are also permits on the Open Beach side and in Marrochydore.

Not only did Stand Up Paddle Surfing Australia (de Aboitiz) miss out on the permits but also long time beach hire local Alan Choats missed his permit. Another 4 people put out of work by the council.

Jamie Mitchell helped with the development of the SUP program.

Up until quite recently ASI was the only Registered Training Organisation in Australia to offer a stand up paddle instructors course.

Like Lacey pointed out there is a whole lot more to teaching SUP than just throwing people on boards and hitting the water. The groups are size restricted to 8 on the flat and 2 in the waves so it's not a huge money maker but it is a great way to make a modest living!

As for the course there is a great deal more covered than just the paddling. It includes hazard assessment, lesson planning, oh&s, legal stuff, environmental issues, record keeping, etc etc etc.

Yes it costs, but doesn't everything these days (and by comparison ASI is about half the price of the other Organisation now offering Sup quals and school accreditatio).

If you were a punter looking to try Sup and you had 2 schools to choose from, one accredited and the other not, which one would you choose?

I'm still not sure on the whole Qual issue, whether to get recoginised or not. Like you Lacey, I was born into the fitness industry have more quals then you can poke a stick at (as well as Outdoor Rec quals) and still work in the family business when asked. The problem that I have with quals is other then the training organisations giving you a piece of paper saying you can teach there style of whatever, then charge you extra yearly to keep that paper current, but not really look after you in anyway shape or form I find it hard to justify the qual. Councils only care that you have all the appropriate procedures put in place as well as insurance, Plus people are still going to look for the best quality for money product/service.
