If you're ever in Bali (and I suggest to go now, as the island is deserted due to the potential Mt. Agung eruption), you should check out the Rip Curl School of Surf in Sanur, on the east coast. Super friendly staff, great location on the beach and they have a complete range of Spitfires available for rental. They even offer taxi boat service around the corner to Serangan (aka Turtle Island), where on a good day, you can expect glassy, head-high to overhead waves like in the video:



I'm riding a new SMIK Custom 7'7 x 27" that goes insane! Heaps of control over my fins and plenty of stability and glide into waves.

I've stayed a few years ago (April, Wet Season) at Puri Santrian in Bali and it was a 5 minutes walk from Rip Curl School of Surfing. Jonni was super helpful; at the time I was working with Starboard in Portugal and he lend me a board (I think it was a Starboard 7'4 Pod) and a carbon paddle. There were a lot of empty outside reefs right in front (most of the times I surfed all by myself) with fun waves. I also went to the other side and scored perfect Bingin and some fun waves at Dreamland.

The only problem with Rip Curl is the price of hiring a board. I have enquired about hiring a Spitfire on my two most recent visits, October and December, they only hire by the hour so 200,000 rp for an hour (aprox. $20 Aus), if you want to stay out longer the price ticks over another 200,000 for each hour thereafter. This is how it was explained to me by the girl managing the school & she wouldn't be flexible at all.
This would turn out to be a very expensive session. There are places close by where you can get a SUP board for the same price to use for as long as you want during that day (Jimmy Lewis boards from Jankie).
I am going back this Friday and would love to try the Spitfire out but just too pricey, guess Ill stick to my own board.

I hired a SUP there yesterday, 2 hrs plus transport for $40. Pretty impressed with the condition of all the Starboard and Smik SUPs. I was planning to get a board from Jankie, road past a couple of times but no one around. The JL boards looked pretty beaten up to be honest but the prices are a lot cheaper than Rip Curl.

Robbo you need to message or phone Jankie to book a sup, the boys aren't there all the time usually after 7.30am for a couple of hours. Over there now and was out the front yesterday also until the wind blew me home.Jankies boards are way cheaper at $25.00 for two hours,RipCurl quoted me $50.00.

I was on same boards as you the flow 8'7 and acid 8'10 and really enjoyed them but was finding them long and this ment moving around on the board a lot.. so I got to test one of Scotty's hipster twin and was sold instantly .. I got a 8'3 x30 115L custom and love it I don't need 2 boards any more it's fast it turns on s dime loves being in the pocket and getting barreled I've found its so light and short my surfing has gone through the roof .. I picked up a custom sunova flash and while I enjoy it I find it at 8'8 116L just too long .. make sure when you get back come demo one at jacks in rye you will love it ..

Thanks Slugga. So yours is a bit longer but has less volume than the standard 8'0. Had you tried the 8'0 before you went custom? From memory you are a similar weight. I will give one a go when I get back. I love the Acids but they are a bit long.

Ok so I tested a 8'2 that had fuller nose and most of the volume forward of the handle and felt like there was nothing in the tail so was sinking the tail and needed to be right up the front of the board when taking off so I worked out with Scotty that I wanted one slightly longer but with the wide point brought back a bit and thinned out as I was coming off a 8'7 flow and 8'10 acid.. these changes really worked well for me at 98kg and 5'10 I find the board balanced well and surfs rad but I'm more central on the board. I kept a bit of length as that helps me catch waves and this thing is a weapon paddeling for waves far better than both the flow and acid. Try the demo they are super fun boards but are seriously progressive too

I would agree with you that a bit of length is an advantage in certain situations. Looks like a great board

I love my 8.2 hipster 2 BUT for me the 8.3 spit i just cannot get enough of .. Defo give one of them a crack too, just like the hipster but a bit more drive

Heading to Bali next week for a few days R&R. Would you suggest booking ahead for a smik to hire from The Rip Curl School or just wing it depending on conditions? Also do they carry a decent range of sizes thinking 8'6 or 8'8. Looking forward to sneaking away for a few hours.
Wind looks ok but not a great deal of swell. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Our rental price hasn't change for the last 8 year. 250.000 rp for a session up to 3 hours or even more.
Yes board start to look a bit old but only visually. None of my boards have been snapped or anything.
JL boards are pretty much timeless so it doesn't really matter and if you add some scratch we do not charge!
We can deliver everywhere in the Island for a charge.
