I messed up the application of my 3M rail tape and it's too high up the rail (towards the deck). The widest bit of the rail is still exposed in some spots.

I'm worried I'll peel up the paint if I try to take it off as there are a couple of flakey spots that make me think the paint is not really well stuck.

Trying to work out the best way to deal with this.

Anyone have any luck removing this stuff, maybe with the use of a hair dryer?

Otherwise, would it be crazy to add another strip of tape right next to this one, so the edges line up, and I have tape that's 120mm wide rather than 60mm wide? I guess it'd make my rail a bit fatter which is a shame as I like to surf on this board. Or maybe I get the new tape and cut it down so it's only 30mm wide, then apply it next to the old tape so it's 180mm wide total...
Or maybe I should just tape the paddle?

I would add more tape to be honest that way your more than covered?

I would tape the paddle anyways, because this also protects the blade.

I would not try to remove it, I do not think it will re-stick as well once having been in place some time. Adding more tape seems the safest way. It is supple enough to apply it edge against edge easily.

Tape the edge of your paddle blade. Use black electrical tape and stretch around the curve areas.

Protects both blade and board.

I wouldn't try pealing the 3M tape off the board as may pull the paint depending on the brand of
board.

Better use the 3M tape. It is more protective, and extremely more durable than electrical tape.

Very hard to stretch the 3M tape around the bottom curves of the blade without wrinkles. Also electrical tape (nitto brand) costs stuff all and can be double taped to last quite a while from my 17yrs of suping.

Many of us here in Australia been electrical taping our paddles for yonks

I have been using electrical tape for years.
For instance I translated DM post in French www.gong-galaxy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2699

But the 3M tape is really better. And VERY easy to apply.



I still use electrical tape on my paddles, but not for protection, to add color stripes to black paddles to find them more easily if I lose them.

You've convinced me to tape the paddle. Am I correct that you only need to tape the blade? You don't need to tape the shaft?

I'm also leaning towards applying another strip of rail tape that lines up with the edge of the current tape. So I'll end up with rail tape that's 120mm wide. The board's a Waterborne Evoke, 9'2" and 145 litres so there's a bit of volume and the rails are not shaped for super high performance. But still, I like the way it surfs at the moment and am hoping this extra thickness on the rails won't really be noticeable.

To you experienced guys - do you think that'll be ok?

I recently applied the 3M clear door edge protection tape on my paddle, very easy to put on, no wrinkles or bubbles etc. So far haven't noticed any new marks on my board . You only need to put it on the paddle, just like Colas shows in the photo.

Also if you did want to add extra rail tape to your Evoke I can't imagine that it would impact the performance in any noticeable way.

I used the RSPro paddle tape for the paddles that I read about on here. The stuff is strong as and only a tad more expensive than the 3M

Just need electrical tape on the blade. Had a carbon evoke and when crappy SBW rail tape came off I didn't replace. You really don't need it if you tape your blade.

I tape around the shaft at the bend where it meets the blade. This way:
- the "elbow" is protected when paddling with the blade under the chest
- it tapes over the ends of the tape running along the blade edges, securing them
- you can use brightly colored tape for this (red, orange) for better visibility if you lose the paddle
