Likely to turn it into a lottery, I should think. But it would be quite something to watch. And it might actually stimulate the development of a new form of SUP craft - which might be potentially very useful for us ocean dwellers.

I wonder how many lightweight race boards are going to cope with going over the falls on a 10ft wave?

The way I read it. Is a beach style start out over the incoming (10ft) waves to a buoy back in to beach twice then a down wind down the bay.

Great idea just don't understand the need for 10ft waves.
2 to 4 ft waves is enough to challenge them see some awesome waves caught and carnage. 10ft just seems dangerous and certain to see boards broken.

I don't see them doing it on anything less than a 12"6 if there is a distance down wind component in the race.

Red bull do pull of some epic events in all action sport categories so I am sure they have planned this well and researched what works and what doesn't.

Do traditional (prone) paddleboarders do anything like this? If so, what kind of boards do they use?

Presumably, as part of the Red Bull research for this event, someone paddled this course in the conditions they intend to run it in. I wonder who that was. Who do we know who is Red Bull sponsored....?

Yes surf life saving lads on the stock clubbie boards but when they drop down a bomb they are laying on the last 3rd of the board and have their body to steer.
Going out they roll over to the side grabbing a handle easily when taking one on the head.

yeah ive been out in some big stuff on a stock (10'6) clubbie board, but you have different options and it is alot easier to get back on and get moving than on a sup in the surf zone

If you can persist through the opening swim leg and big Daryl's commentary this might stimulate the imagination on testing the limits on surfcraft. Love the claim on the 18' ski.

If they had to wear speedos it would probably all work out ok on the day

push the boundries I say Its an invite only event so the guys that do it should be able to handle the conditions. I rekon a 12 or 14 foot sup is a great board to ride big waves , and a to get over or through them. As long as its not dumping type shorebreak should all be good Id find this type of racing far more exciting than a long flat water paddle in a lake. Great to see a big company get on board and do something to promote the sport. As dirty harry would say , you feeling lucky punk

Well I'd certainly watch it, for sure.
