Just go easy when removing old tape - it can stick like ** to a blanket and may pull some of the material under it off your board. My thought is that a gentle heat with a hairdryer will help loosen the adhesive to remove it more easily but I could be incorrect on that

I use the method of the 3M video:

But with also pushing on the tape fold with another finger, like:

I'd use a hair dryer to help remove it and replace it with a quality rail tape.. like RSPro or similar product.

Its available in clear and different colours.. I used the black one on my Naish Nalu.

Love a good DJ Clip, personally know of 2 people who got into SUP surfing from DJ's videos when they started SUPing.

Oh man : had an ugly experience with RS pro on my rails last week. Needed to remove to repair a small ding. Used a hari dryer and went exceedingly slow and still rip off the top layer making a HUGE repair job.

Buggar.. I heard of that happening before.. but I've also heard of many cases where people have successfully move the Rail Saver Pro tape from one board to another.
I once removed it to reposition it.. No problem.

Maybe it has something to do with how some boards paint chips and flakes off when hit with a paddle.. and others don't.

Well, if your board is simply painted - as opposed to hotcoated - , heating it will remove the paint... that's why you use a heat gun to remove old paint :-)

And thats why I don't use it, just tape the paddle.

When a SUP comes in for repair, if there is any hint of the possibility rail tape removal I won't do a firm quote. I've had to relaminate biax carbon along a foot of rail. Another time, had to drown it so bad in solvents to remove it without tearing away glass, that some core melted (pinholes in factory laminate)
On some factory boards the paint is so crap you can't use heat or most solvents

Its nothing but trouble..... rail tape is like a box of chocolates.......

JL boards are painted, as per their web site. An outer layer of "Automotive Urethane paint".

I use the thin tape they use on expensive bike frames, car sills etc, to protect from stone chips etc. Check out paragon tapes on Google or Ebay to catch my drift.
I didn't have success with thicker SUP tapes, they lifted off the sharp rails on my boards. It's also cheaper, which pays for paddle edge guard.

Paddle edge guard really works well for me. The edge guard tends to split on the shoulder of the blade, where it impacts the board, which it supposed to do, rather than damaging the rail, so I place a layer of strong repair tape, gorilla clear, over these aeas which means it lasts even longer, I replace this tape say twice a year.

Double protection!
