Question: I thought that Quobbas weren't recommended for board with deep channels, but I see photos of a lot of you guys using them on Sunova Speeeds and Creeks, which have some of the deepest channels I have ever seen, plus some others like the SMIKs that use channels too. What gives with Quobbas on boards with channels? When do they work, when is it a bad idea?

Interesting to read because I couldn't find any info on this either, like Colas.

My boards don't have channels but I do notice as well the extra speed and trying new lines on the face of the wave. I can't compare it to the c-drives but I have tried many other different fins to feel a difference. I haven't noticed a difference between the "normal"glass quobba's and the carbon ones, maybe I need better conditions to notice that, I haven't had those conditions yet with the carbon's.

I picked up a set of the glass in M and L, great customer service and it was shocking how fast they got here from across the world during a pandemic. I'm psyched to try these out.

Strange, genuine FSCII boxes have two holes.
Do you have a picture?

It looks to me that the rail side of the back slot has been painted over as I can just make out a mark where the hole should be. Have a look on the inside you may see a hole

How to make an on-the-water-adjustable tool-less center Quobba fin for an US Box:

You need:
- a FCS Quobba fin (of course :-) )
- the FCS US Box adapterwww.surffcs.eu/products/fcs-longboard-box-adapter?lang=fr
- a finjakwww.pelicansurfcraft.com/product-page/the-finjak



Alas, the Quobba FCS tabs are 1mm too close together, they do not fit



No worry, just file away 1mm:



And then it fits perfectly and snugly!
Beware to be more careful than me and not eat into the fin base :-)

Note that you should put the adapter in "reverse" wrt to is normal use, the tab with the screw hole in the rear, both because this way you will have a better leverage to pivot the fin, and the finjak will perturbate less the water flow.



Insert the finjak in the box.
Note: I have painted a line (yellow) to give me a handy visual clue to position the fin relative to it when adjusting it on the water.
Mine is at 20cm from the leading edge of the front fins (I like a closer cluster on long boards like this 9'0", I can go up to 26cm on shorter ones)

Great instructional Colas! I have been thinking about putting a US box in one of my boards but then worry about how to use the FCS fin collection I have. Well done and now easily adjustable.

I got my new fins wet today, started with the larger orange size but couldn't get the center fin in easily so I put the green smaller size in the center. Then switched to all green. I liked the latter setup more for my 85 kg on 110L Worldwide. I had a blast, I'm not tuned in enough to make a legit comparison, this was my first time surfing punchy waves in a month plus so hard to compare to prior setup. Also confounded by switch from quad to thruster. Look forward to trying again soon.

Awesome and I'm curious after your experiences with the quobba's. If you are out of the water for a while and start to pick it back up is it sometimes hard to feel the change that you made, you switched from Quad to Thruster and you changed the fins. Of course what is already mentioned previously is that the speed from traditional quads should be comparable with the quobba's thruster, therefore I also run them as a thruster at the moment.

To make sure that you are correct you mean (because you wrote it differently), the green/yellow is the Large (bigger ones) and the Orange ones are the Mediums (a bit smaller). It's true that sometimes you need to adjust them a bit these quobba fins, like the tutorial from Colas above that he shared for the FCS tabs to fit in a US adapter, I had to sand them also for my future boxes as well a bit (maybe 0,5 mm or 1 mm). I also heard that sometimes they are very sharp and can cut your leash so gently sanding the back can also help to avoid that.

Other than that very curious if you join the band wagon of Quobba's, the first step is already made ;)

Lol I got the sizes backward, I see now green is the bigger size, I gotta try all orange/med thruster and green/L sides with orange center. Thanks for telling me! I couldn't easily tell size difference.
I definitely didn't feel any slower with Q thruster compared to JL quads. I felt really fast and had some exhilarating rides racing to make sections. I was on the JL quads a week ago (coming off 3 week injury) but waves were weak and yesterday was much better, so hard to compare. I'm excited to try again.

I am scared of the sharpness, felt it when fin hit sole of boot. I was nervous to sand them, don't know how much to dull or if I'll mess up fin.

Cool, it's also my favorite set-up, don't want to switch it at the moment and leave it like this as well.

Other interesting fact is that the quobba fins are now also used in the WSL by Ciao Ibelli. Let's see how long it takes before one of the top dogs in the APP world tour picks them up to have a go.

Just pit a pair in the SMIK Hipster Twin, rode it in steep shoulder high beach break yesterday and thought I might have some trouble with it sliding out as the quobba are smaller than the standard fin setup for the hipsters, but had no problems, faster and looser than the standard fins and still plenty of drive

Nah, they just sanded through to the carbon
After 10 years and 20 odd boards I've worked out what I like and down to a 2 board quiver, the others a 10' which is fast enough for me without the quobba LS

My Quobbas are now my go to fin in every board l ride, noticed the difference the most in my 10'0 SMIK Stylelord, 9'5 Sunova Speed, 10'8 Sunova Revolution and 9'1 Sunova Placid, incredible speed and dive while maintaining tight turning ability. love them

Large Quobba sides with 6 inch FCS Center. Best set up I have found.

I guess it depends on your style... but also the position of the rear fin.

The boards where I use a center Quobba M have the rear box quite far back for my taste (26 cm leading edge to leading edge from fronts, projected on the stringer), and I welcome a bit of looseness to compensate. Under a 24cm distance I am OK with an L.

FYI, I just saw that the M fiberglass (orange) fins in FCS system are currently on sale at 115AUD the thruster set. But not the other models.
