Im thinking of buying some fins for my new 9'2 ripper so i can ride it as a quad , just want to know whats is the difference between a quad set up to a 2 and 1.Are quads faster , ,make the board turn faster or do they make it a bit more slidey.Im trying to surf more rail to rail , i notice a lot of sup riding with more tail slide turns and snaps are quads better for this style.

Cheers

You don't necessarily have to buy a designated quad set of fins either. You can try using 4 side fins to start with.

Quad set-up loosens my board up. I think the 2+1 has a little more drive down the line. I've been enjoying both. MR (Mark Richards) range of fins is a good option for the front sides also. Bigger fin, for bigger boards...

Here's some other discussions.....

So many variables when setting up a quad. More fins equals more possibilities.

Using 4 x side fins for extra bite or two sides and 2 centers, assymetrics also work well, bigger fins in the back rather than front etc etc etc etc etc. My favourite was all 4 fins the same size in similar areas and size to my normal thruster set up. Eg on a shortboard usually using M7 as thruster = M3 all round as quad.

Find a shop with a test drive center and play, play, play.

For a good read on quads the father of the Modern Quad Bruce McKee has a great website with more info than you will ever need.

Bruce has spent his life dedicated to this fin set up and any shaper in the know understands that his positionings, angles and cants rebirthed the design from the old Twin plus 2 set ups that had many issues and problems of their own.

In fact when FCS launched their quad fin range they distributed Bruces fin positionings to shapers. At that point most shaping bays in the country had his formulas on their walls.

Bruce deserves credit, if you like Quads, you like Bruces work.

The PSH boards run Future fins and the back set of box's are shollower than the front ones so just runing 4 normal side fins might not work. from what i can see you have to buy FF's quad sets other wise it wont fit.

Yep, the center boxes in Future are shallower than sides. You can however if you are brave sand the bases off the side fins to fit the center box. Not that hard.

Adding cant to the back fins other than just 90deg like centers can also be helpful to loosen the board while maintaining drive.

Jacko, you should speak to Scotty and Pete (and Frosty from the other side) about a full test drive center of each system to help you sell more upgraded fins for all of your boards. It seems most SUP riders are yet to really realise the difference fins can make to any boards performance.

Got a set of S4 futures for my 9'2 wide ripper and it definately made a difference on the positive side. Surfed some fairly steep waves this weekend and they hold in well. Found turning no problems , a lot looser than the supplied 2 + 1. Found out the hard way by getting a couple of sides for the back and they wouldnt fit,

The WR Ripper is an excellent Board , Very stable and picks up waves easily, being
77kgs i probably could of downsized even more from my Last board which was a 10"3 but that will be next time. Only been into this caper for 18mths so probably need to advance a bit more and work out whether stability V shortboard feel is the go.

At 77KGS i rekon you could go down for sure , im usually around the 95KG mark and the board is very stable for me.Not sure i want to go any smaller though.

Being a lightweight 70kg-ish, I find the larger quad fin combos tend to stiffen up the rear. Twin setups I have tried allow too much pivot, causing sliding out and stalling, plus makes a 9 footer balance and paddle like an 8 footer.

Trying a compromise with larger, twin style fronts/sides and smaller 3.5 inch stabiliser-type rears/centres. Only tried the first pic setup twice on the McTavish 9', but was allowing for nice carving turns that generate good drive, without too much pivot or slide, but still able to snap back when pushed. I pushed too far this morning though, as on my 'last wave' in, I landed on my arse on the fin which resulted in second pic.

For your size, I would for sure try the Simon quads, and would not rule out the Lopez Quads either. Got heaps of demo fins handy as I am always trying something different, so give us a yell if you can't get hold of any to 'test drive' before you buy, coz good fins aint cheap.

Some more pics of Futures combos with similar twin+stabilisers...The T1's I tried this arvo, and worked well on the C4 9'6 Sub Vector. Waves not as good as this morning though, so looking forward to getting out there tomorrow for another try...the Goldy turned on some good waves today...
