Stanboard Pro 2023 bought some Small rear quads FCS II (i am light) but don't like the gap.
Is the fix to sand down the rear nubbin or was the box installed wrong by starboard?

I have the same exact problem on my SB Spice 8'2" 2024. I haven't had a reply back yet. If I try to push it down, I'm going to crush glass between the tabs in the middle. Tried various FCS2 fins in my collection w same result.

So I have the same gap on both of the rear boxes on my 2023 8'8" Spice. The fronts have almost no gap. The rear fins are clicked in properly.

I blew out one of the rears a few weeks ago and it's been fixed with a new fin box by a local guy, who has done a great job. Interestingly, the gap is still there and it's the same as on the other original rear box. I forgot to ask him where he got the fin box from, but he did tell me he had to buy a set.

I haven't checked on my Pro since I am currently using it as a thruster.

Mine won't fully click into the roller without the fin crushing glass in between the tabs. I have some FCS1 fins but you get a lot of flex, just not as solid in the box.

I've had this problem with some fins ,i sanded the tabs to make them sit in better .easy fix ,

so sand the back tabs? I tried it but guess i need to be more aggressive. Odd this appears to be a common problem

Yes mate sand small amounts at a time constantly checking ,a small gap is not a problem with fins ,
it may even be the front of the tab not allowing it to go down ,put it against a fin that does fit perfect
and you will see where it needs sanding off ,but I have done it a lot with one brand of fin .their mould was a little off .

I had a heavy tail rocker on one board and had to sand most to fit down ,I had to sand both tabs ,FCS 11 yes sand the rear part to mid

Indeed, the boss of Quobba fins wrote me that a gap is actually beneficial!:

"Your question about the 'gap' under the 'Shifter' fin is interesting.
Quobba now know from CFD analysis and in-surf testing that 'surface drag' is the most drag that holds back speed on a surfboard.
Surface drag occurs along "the lower part of the fin", where water traveling just above the surface of the surfboard is really slow moving and sticky!

you mean how they are installed?

I think you need to focus on the front of the fin box,as has been mentioned the pic of the black air core fin showing it is not engaging properly into the slot,and is forcing the very bottom at the front of the fin to bottom out ,and not slide forward enough ,therefore not being able to push into position ,imo it's not the tabs or the gap between them that's the problem ..is it a fin box problem or the fin ?is the fin a generic fin or a genuine futures fin ,i personally think it's the fin ,as I have had to alter a fin slot before on a generic set of fins ,simply file the bottom of the slot to allow the fin to raise up more and allow the fin to slide forward and therefore allow the dynamic of the fin to snap in place .I hope you can understand this blurb

So I went ahead and sanded the fin between the tabs to see if it would pop fully into the FCS2 roller. - No help at all.
I also measured the box depths, not the problem.
As previously stated I lubed and tried a half dozen different FCS2 fins I have in my stash - Same result.
This leaves either the depth of the forward hinge you push into or the back tab roller placement as the culprit, both of which I can't do anything about.
Really love this board, but a board should of never left the factory without someone checking to see if fins actually fit in the boxes. Takes just a few seconds. I found some FCS1 MR Twins that really make this board fun in small waves, but you can really feel the play in a FCS1 vs a FCS2 or Futures box.

Sorry correction,generic or genuine FCS11,I do agree with fins being installed at the factory.quantity control could be an issue !

If you have many fcs11 fins have you checked if the front notch is exactly the same on all of them?

I have..like I said, I pulled about 7 different fins sets out to see if one would fit. All w the same result. I've thought about sanding and expanding the front notch of the fin but I haven't got a throw away set to play with. All my fins are straight from FCS. I think we all agree that putting fins in should be plug and play.

Sorry I was lte to this thread,I get your frustration,I have had this problem and altering the notch fixed it! But I had a crappy plastic fcs 11 fin to sacrifice ,I totally agree about the plug and play remark,what has been Starboards response?

I can now confirm that I have gaps on both the Pro and the Spice. I am not bothered enough to do anything about it.

I had a sacrificial fin so I routed a larger female tab in the front and as expected, the fin was able to seat without crushing the deck in between the fin tabs. Starboard agreed that either the box was set too deep or there was excessive putty and paint in between. They offered me several options.

PS If you haven't tried a pair of Keels or Twins w some nubs in the back boxes on the Spice you're missing out. It really excels in chest and below waves.

Hi myself and partner have starboard ,spice and pro we had the same problem but on investigating the fin box on both boards the front of the fin box under the tab where the fin fits in there was resin that had not be cleaned out and set hard.I scrapped it out which was a mission but when the filler coat or resin was fully scrapped out the fin fitted.
