Gday all

I have a 2011 starboard widepoint which needs a bit of love.Have repaired and sealed all the dings with west system 105 epoxy and it now needs a paint job.

I need to know what type of paint to use and do i need to prime over repairs,paint then clear coat.

Have looked at acrylic lacquer,acrylic enamel and enamel but really have no idea.

Any tips appreciated

Try to contact starboard, to known the exact type of paint that works best. The idea is to use the same type of paint than they used (acrylic, glycerophtalic, vinyl, epoxy, polyurethane...). Plus they should give you the references of the colors (RAL, Pantone, ...)

For instance, applying new acrylic paint on old glycerophtalic ones will eat them on the long term. In the Gong line, at some time the same model could be made in Portugal or Chinese plants (you chose which when buying), but one used acrylic and the other glycerophtalic, so the recommended paint for repairs was different.

And always cover the paint with an UV-resistant varnish, glossy or matte.

I use a 2 pack paint (called 2 pack but was actually made up of 3 separate parts). Its as good or better than original paint, and no clear coat is needed.

I used this brand of paint, its very very good stuff (bit expensive and really strong fumes when using it) www.baslac.com/au/home

I once pulled rail tape off a Naish board I bought, and accidently took off some paint with it. So I rubbed the rails down, colour matched and re-painted them. Once dry I wet rubbed them with superfine paper, then buffed them up. Now a couple of years later, they are still like new.

I get it from a car paint shop.


But if you want to go cheaper, then acrylic is ok, but it tends to chip off after a while. (Chips off easier than a 2 pack paint if its hit with a paddle ect)

Just depends how much cost/time you want to put into it.

Thanks colas and ARichards.Was hoping for a cheap and easy fix similar to paperboys idea.Am prepared to put the time in but not the cash and dont have the gear for a professional finish.Something in a spray can off the shelf that is similar in colour and easy to do again as i am sure it will need more repairs in the future.

As for prep have sanded back with 400 grit and will go over with wax and grease remover.Thanks again all.

Just to be clear, I only use off-the shelf (or rather, off-the-web-site) spray cans and touch pens.

Just get the RAL numbers from Starboard and buy auto paint spray cans with the proper RAL numbers. Auto paints resist to the UV and gasoline, it should be good enough. If possible, get the proper one (acrylic or glycerophtalic basically), but using the improper one should not be too dramatic I guess.

PS: try to also buy touch pens. for the paints and the varnish. It makes fixing small paint chips a breeze. E.g:

Thanks colas was thinking of using a touch pen for the black line.

Went out and got duplicolour auto acrylic,plan is to prime,base coat and finish with a clear matt.Could take a couple of weeks but will post photos when i am done.

If it all fails off too bunnings for a foam roller and some dulux weathershield.Thanks again all.

Well this looks awfully simikar to a project I did later last year!
just heavily sanded smooth, few coats of grey primer and then a slight metallic grey I got from a car shop. Cost maybe $35 all up for both cans and some sand paper?
Bit of a pain taping the rails off but good end result. Wasn't quite the same colour (slight sheen) but very close

Got some primer on but with no garage to work in the weather down here is not helping.

Turned out great.. Now go put some RailSaverPro on it..

I always use automotive lacquer it's a 1k product, then surfboard clear coat over the top.
The auto lacquer is very easy to thin down with standard paint thinners and colours mix well.

But that job you have done is very well done.

Will be putting rail tape on tonight,thanks for posting a how to vid DJ.
