no, probably not - however a good opportunity to trade up if its a good paddle.

I'm not aware of any rules of SUP competition that prohibit it. But I expect that in sophisticated disciplines like SUP Jousting (and maybe Polo) it wouldn't be considered de rigueur.

I think if the paddle belonged to the competitor and you were assisting by returning the paddle by throwing it to the person then I believe that may be considered good sportsmanship.

It might be a bit off if you had sharpened the blunt end and impaled the ex fellow competitor allowing you to win the comp. It could be frowned upon by the judges unless they agreed that he was a total dick and deserved it.

IMO.. No..

A paddle is to light.. and not pointy enough.. (just kidding)..

I would suggest that "paddle throwing" was a way for this person to outlet their aggression. A lot of "competitors" are naturally aggressive. They display a "I have to win" attitude which translates into aggression at times. You see it all the time in highly competitive people. Some can control it, others can't. Particularly if they feel slighted or put off when they are doing their best.

I guess it would be better if he didn't throw the paddle, but maybe it could be compared to the footballer who recently kicked a guy that had gone down. I believe he was banned for twenty years. Should the "paddle thrower" be banned from competing for a period?

Some say aggression is part of winning, you need it to perform at your best. i9 am not sure about it. I personally have given up all form of competition as I have got older as I am tired of the aggression that people show. I don't need that nonsense around me.

If you don't have a chainsaw or tomahawk with you, what else are you supposed to throw?

Re my old post on "Laird is the king post". Competition surfers are an annoying, rabid, OCD, addictive personality, selfish lot in general who can never get their fill. (This is an exaggeration not all are like this BL you were always a kind giving wave god).
Cant decide between Tom Carroll and Kelly Slater who was the worst and most rabbid of wave (SNAKES) takers. You really need to be like this to be successful good surfers like RASTA and Ozzie Wright couldnt compete on the WCT because they were just too nice. My advice download a big picture of Tom Carroll riding his SUP or/and Kelly Slater for the other side of the paddle and laminate them and contact them onto each side of your blade. When you spot a surfer paddling over to you, point at the picture, laugh out loud and then throw the paddle straight at their NOGGIN, If its carbon its not going to hurt much anyway.

Oh just a side note. I must state in Kelly defence one late wednesday arvo in the early 90's kelly did come down and share Little Avalon with me and three mates and was the most humble nice gentleman you would ever meet. It was smallish and working perfect, offshore and he just sat off our group chatted and shared a few sets with us.

Guess he has since gone to the evil side? Myself, I would still rather be up a river in a Canadian canoe throwing lures around. Infinitely more relaxing than dealing with competition adulterated attitude!

Hi RPG, In the club and committee's defence.

SurferShane was a guest competitor at 2 of our comps. In the 2nd contest he took exception to not getting though a heat. Anyone who's surfed in any form of competition would have maybe felt once or twice their waves should have scored higher.. It is what it is, everyone volunteers to judge in each event. The head judge keeps an eye on things, but they are all not professional judges.

Although post this event he decided to go to various social platforms and bag out the club and it's members. Something about favouritism. Complete BS.
The committee let him know that it was not appreciated as were not surfing for the yellow jersey, we are volunteering our time to put these comps on and if he wasn't happy about his result then he should have brought it up directly with the team. It was not taken very well by him, and he continued to post junk about the club and its committee members. The team decided to suggest that our club wasn't the best fit for him.

At the end of the day, If i turned up to local board riders club day as a guest not a member, didn't get the result i wanted and them flame them on facebook/seabreeze. I would not expect to be welcomed back.

The club is a fantastic crew of all ages and abilities and we are always welcoming of anyone to participate in our events. The issue here was just a very public attack on the club and some specific committee members, and we won't accept that.

This was very long time ago, and I am surprised it is being thrown back onto this forum. I hesitated responding as i did not want to give it oxygen, but I am passionate about our club and felt it appropriate to defend it.

Threw my paddle at my wife a few years ago just before a comp (even though it was by accident ) not a good move , long way home carrying a Sup under your arm to tired to compete the next day

Paddle throwing is Not good behavior and should NOT have been tolerated in a comp final.
he should have been...
1. disqualified.
2. Banned from competing for 2 years.
3. made to hand back any awards he received.
