Originals.
Bought the very nice looking Pintail boards, Originals trucks, various wheels and bearings.
Liked them a lot, but compared to the Loaded boards, seemed to have a lot of rolling resistance.
In general, smaller wheels, different bearings.
The Loaded had some nice wheels, bigger, ordered the same.
Orangatang Kegel 80mm 80a Orange Longboard Skateboard Wheels from Basement Skate.
And some bearings that are in the small box to the right.
No idea about this stuff, but Internet shopping is your friend.
And bits are ridiculously cheap compared to SUP things.
Commenced the swap.


Removing the old wheels involved undoing a nut with the pictured shifter.
A socket would have been better.
These are the bearings.
You push them in to the middle of the wheels before you put the wheel on the axle thing.


Looked better instantly.


Off for a test.


Look at those wheels!
Much faster, smoother, but the Originals deck lacks flex.


OK, with 90 plus KG of Nozza on board, there's a bit of flex.
But feels much improved, although I could probably have ordered the board like this in the first place if I knew more...


Stand by.......

Nice setup nozza, at 80kg I find the 43 pintail of that model has too much flex probably because of a very narrow shape combined with 8ply deck though a 9 ply would better. Those orange orangatang big wheels are nice, soo stable and lots of bite.

Those of you who were concentrating last semester will recall I got a Loaded Vanguard.

Great board, lovely flex, almost bounces off carves.






Just before the melanoma surgery put an end to fun for 6 weeks, a mate at work got an Evolve Carbon GT Electric board.
Tried hard not to like it, but rode it around the car park at work grinning like an idiot.




But compared to the Loaded Vanguard, it was a truck - heavy, lacking flex.
But fun....
Laid up following surgery, running out of things to look at and buy on the internet.
Discovered another brand of electric board, Boosted.
Essentially an electric Vanguard.
Ordered, waited, delays in customs, trip to Byron, surgery complications, back...
A delivery.



The electric Vanguard. Less range and power than the Evolve, but nice flex, plenty of speed.
Took a while to give it a decent go.



Have to admit to being hooked.
Another ride in May..



The previously terrifying underpass possible with brakes.



Really good fun, still a reasonable workout, back leg in particular feeling the strain.
Could not be more pleased with it.

Not quite as dear, but close to it.
Both look to be very good quality though.
Given the fun I get out of them, I can easily justify the expense.

So I'm pretty well hooked on the electric thing.
But I've got a reasonable quiver of conventional boards, in particular the 6'6" Hamboard Classic.
What to do?
It was a "no contest" when picking which board - non electric boards not even making it in to the Kombi.

I have a habit of waking in the middle of the night.
I think about things, read, search the internet for stuff.
I started to think of electrifying the Hamboard.
Searched for kits, couldn't find anything easy, or up to date.
So, I thought, strip the hardware from an existing board.
As the Evolve batteries and motors were more powerful, and the Hamboard was a big, heavy board, thought they would be more appropriate.
Decided on a Bamboo GTX, emailed "ask@evoke, telling them my plans.
Trent replied that a Bamboo GT would be better. I did have the idea of just getting the motor and batteries, but then decided a complete board would be better as I could then return everything to original if I wanted to.
Put in an order.....

Yes, I had put the camera next to a post next to the path.
There was a matching post the other side to stop the local residents driving up the path.
I was enjoying the feel of the tail sliding out, got a bit too enthusiastic, and slid the rear wheel the wrong side of the post.
No real harm done apart from some skin off, and it actually feels good to have hurt myself doing something stupid

Went over to work today to catch up on stuff I should have done during the week when I was building and falling off skateboards.
Rode the Hamboard Evolve instead.
Injury from the fall was initial skin off, now bruising and sore down the left side that bounced off the concrete.
Note full protective gear in the car park .....

At work Sunday again. Invoicing lost out to a back to back ride on the Classic Evolve and the Boosted.
I'm a bit disappointed that the terrifying speeds I was doing in the car park look like I'm trundling along.
Impressions.
The Classic Evolve feels ridiculously loose and slidey, and I really love it.
The Boosted felt tight and zippy in comparison.
I'm probably safer on the Boosted because the temptation to try and slide out the Classic Evolve is too great.
The Boosted remote is easier to use - a deadman's handle trigger, and one wheel for forward and reverse.
Evolve remote has the same deadman's handle, plus a trigger for forward and a thumb trigger for braking - no reverse.
The Boosted braking is more controlled, but momentum and 100kg of Nozza can defeat it.
Evolve braking is violent enough to throw you off the front, but after a longer ride on Monday I was getting the hang of applying it gradually in small bits, but it will stop the board, if not Nozza, when asked to.
The Boosted is a great in the car all the time board, the Evolve, admittedly after I have made it bigger is a more dedicated thing.
For some reason the inverter in the Kombi will charge the Boosted, but not the Evolve.
Love them both.

A bit from this morning.
Beware taking on the gap between the concrete path and the toppings....

Here's 3 minutes from about 2 hours of electric skating.

Beware, it's probably 2 1/2 minutes too long, but I'm learning.
Skate and video stuff.

Decided the Classic Evolve needed a wheel upgrade.
Ordered the donor with 97mm wheels, then discovered 107mm wheels were available.
Faster and slidier, and I've become addicted to the slide.
Wheels ordered and arrived, investigated, the drive belt covers looked like they weren't going to fit the larger wheels.
Emailed Trent at Evolve, asked should I have ordered the full "Street Upgrade" rather than just the wheels, he said no, they should come with the appropriate belt covers.
Wheels arrived, no covers, Trent express posted some covers out, cannot fault the service. No charge either.
Cold Melbourne (OK, Phillip Island) Saturday afternoon, time to do the upgrade.


Front simpler, do that first.
Remove the old wheels using the provided Evolve skate tool.
New wheels shinier and bigger.


Wider wheel wells required.


And deeper, but short of cutting holes in the board, I think I will add some more risers.
Move from skating off a first floor balcony to a second floor.
To the back wheels.
New belt covers at the ready.


By the way, I like where I am at the moment.
Bruce Brown DVD on the big(ish) screen, heater, beer.


97mm vs. 107mm covers.


No real idea what I am doing here, covers off.


Wheels and drive belts off.


There are options with 32 and 38 tooth drive gears I don't fully understand yet.
I was expecting the drive gears that had been propelling 100kg of Nozza around to be jammed in the wheels.
Slid out without a problem.


Re fitted, new wheels.


New covers in place.


Bigger wheels needed bigger wheel wells at the back too.


Re sizing done using the well known wood working tool, the angle grinder.


Can not praise Evolve, and their man Trent enough for helping with this.
Prompt service, stuff sent out to a strange man in Melbourne without delay.
I may be biased, but if a skateboard can look sexy, this does.

Nozza, I tracked you down! The other threads were closed when I came back to do a bit of an update.

I see you are on to some cool new things: new boards and electric. Nice!

I'm going to have to check out that Evolve set-up...pushing the Hamboards Classic around is a beach.

I was just coming back to the old thread to let folks now that I contacted Original Truck Co. about ordering some heavier springs and told him the "symptoms" the board was having. Basically, whenever I leaned over off center, the board would slam over...and was hard to control. There was no gradual turning at all. It was an all or nothing deal and I didn't like the out-of-control feeling. The guy said it sounded like the Wave Cams were cracked. He said that was a problem that Hamboards was constantly dealing with and why they ultimately designed and are now selling their own version of Original trucks.

So, I decided to give it one more go with the heavy-duty white springs and new Wave Cams (the old ones were indeed cracked). I think it's better with the white springs, but still seems to be slamming over to the side on any bit of lean. I'm thinking the Wave Cams may have cracked again. I haven't checked yet. If the Cams are broken already, I'm going to have to go in a different direction...repurpose the Originals to a smaller board and / or maybe go electric for the Classic.

Anywho, I took that bad boy to a local skate park and the kids (both big and little) were tripping out on the board...asking all kinds of questions about it. Quite a conversation starter. I took a few spins around the park as everyone watched and then took off to my next destination...

I also skated it on my street and some neighbors whom I never met came out of the woodwork to ask about the board...One of them wants me to help him build one...but probably a smaller version. It's cool, though, because now I know four more neighbors on my street, invited to hang out, watch sports, drink beer. Nice...

I put the board up for a minute due to some pain. I had an on the job injury a couple of years ago and the high risers on the Classic kind of aggravated it. So, I laid off that and jumped back into the pool to swim laps and getting my bike back in gear in preparation for surfing for the first time in about eight years...Picked up an FCD HP Longboard in mint condition at about 1/2 price...


Great to see the projects you've got going. I think the electric motor might be the way to go. I'm going to look into it. Peace.

I wondered where you had gone.
Electric has killed all the other skating , but haven't done much of anything off water lately.
I'd use summer as an excuse, but days when it's not good for the water I seem to have other stuff to do.
