Hi all

Just scored a SUP for xmas ... a waterborne evoke 10'6"
I surfed a lot over the years ... 52 years old now

Man it's almost like learning to surf again ... I'm ok once on a wave but balance has been tricky
especially when paddling with the waves ... is there a technique for paddling with the waves as opposed to paddling out ?
I seem to have way better balance paddling out and over the waves ...

all good fun though ... and found all new ways of being sore !!!

BTW ... I'm a goofy footer ... mainly surfing right handers so any back hand wave catching tips appreciated

Cheers

When I started I found it frustrating when waves snuck up from behind - it was hard to readjust your balance and I would often fall off the back. The same thing happened a lot when trying to catch the wave. So, a couple of tips:

1. Stand in surf stance when paddling with the waves at your back - you are better able to balance fore/aft.
2. When paddling for the wave, be ready to lean forward and commit. It is a bit like skiing - you have to lean down the hill. When the wave pushes you forward, and the board points down the wave, you need to be leaning forward, in surf stance preferably, otherwise you will fall off the back. Oh yeah, bend your knees too.

Hope that helps.

Had a great session yesterday morning at Cylinder beach North Stradbroke

it was perfect glassy 2-3 foot shore break ... caught heaps of waves ...

The evoke surfs really nicely ... was surprised how well it went on the shories ...
