Hey guys,

I'm new to surfing and will be new to SUP and looking for a new/used board. I think my main use for a SUP will be on flat water but also like the thought of using it in small waves as my surfing progresses. From reading your posts I might get hooked on the surfing part, but I'd be the only guy doing it locally. Everyone surfs.

Most of my research here tells me I should be looking at 32-34" wide however we live in a bus and I'm limited to 30" on my rack. Length isn't an issue.

I would be great to hear about any boards you think would provide enough stability for a beginner and progression for 2ft-4ft waves but no wider than 30" :-) I want to be challenged whilst learning but also enjoy it so not too punishing :)

I'm about 5'11 and 78kgs.

The AllWave was looking good but its thinnest model is 31". I see the Nalu comes in a 30"

I would look into a Longboard style. Something around 10 feet and 28-30 inches wide. It will glide great on the flat water and be really fun on a wave. I've got an ecs noserider I like but almost every brand sells one. I would aim for a 120-130 litres at your weight. Have fun.

Can't go wrong with a Nalu, as always good to have a longboard in the quiver and the family can use it to flat water paddle.
Also the length and fuller nose will provide stability.

If you are compromised on width, you can make up for it on length or volume to aid stability. So that means looking at something up around 10'6" - 11' length, or else try to find something around 170-180 litres of volume. The Nalu is good and so is the Starboard Blend. These boards surf small waves in a cruisey longboard way and they paddle flat water better than most wave boards.

A 10,6 ...30 Wide 163 litre naish nalu sounds like a good choice for you ,other brands make boards of similar size which also will do the job .

Thanks for all the advice. I've found a 10'6" 30" Nalu 2015 GT model in mint condition going for $1000. Looking at the Naish website they don't seem to make the GT model anymore but I can see a GS costs $1,350 or a GTX $1,550.

Do Nalu's hold their value that much that a $1000 for a 2015 model is good value?

I can't find any Fanatic or Starboard equivalents for sale secondhand.

If this Nalu isn't such a great buy can anyone recommend another model for me to hunt down?

As with all things, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If it is genuinely in mint condition, make an offer of $800 but be prepared to settle somewhere in between.

Hi Rich,
We may have been talking the other day about my Cruise Control.
Here's my humble opinion/two cents...
I have owned a couple of Nalus and I wish I'd kept one. I used it for fun flatwater cruising (not a serious distance board) and for surfing. They are lovely boards. My Jimmy might have the slightest edge on glide and stability, but the Naish is FAR better in the waves and a bit lighter to carry. Better fin options too.
One of the best all-rounders there is. Yes, they hold their value if they are well looked after.
I say GO FOR IT... I wish I'd bought one for my first board: a great place to begin AND a board to progress with.
