I bought a new 2018 10'6" Fanatic Fly SUP last month to take the kids out on and to catch the odd little wave when it's not windy. Been using it on flat water with only centre fin until today when we finally got some swell. Went to put the side fins in for the first time, 3 of the 4 grub screws were fine but the last one just spun in the plug with no resistance at all, like it was stripped already. I've been using FCS systems for 20+ years and never stripped a plug, and it really didn't feel like there was anything there to start with on this one, but from the shop/Fanatic's perspective I'm guessing they'll think "idjut applied too much force". No way to tell one way or the other from looking at it.

My question for the forum:

Is it worth the hassle of trying to warranty it, or should I just do a quick fix with epoxy etc.? I've read a few posts on fixing FCS plugs (think the Fly has Futures boxes?) and it doesn't seem like the fill-and-drill treatment with epoxy is very durable which won't be good - need to be able to take the side fins out whenever I'm on the flat.

Best option is just to use grub screws with a larger diameter, but still using the same key. Simple and durable solution.

Have u contacted the place of purchase? Most stores carry additional lugs for issues such as this.

The shop sent me a larger screw.

Which shop did you get it from?

I bought a load of same diameter screws but a bit longer.....works great. FCS fins.....pain in the ass!

The problem is the knock off fin boxes a lot of the companies use have shorter grub screws and if the notch in the fin is cut to deep the end up with very few threads being used if you can get the old one out then go to a shop and get a screw from a genuine futures box which should be longer and allso try use a fin we're the little notch has not been cut quite so deep.

Wrong.
The way mass produced boards are made, is through a heat mold. When the heat is applied, genuine finbox or not, the box can deform. And genuine lug or not, there isn't much room for tolerance.

There's two options.
1). Grab some long lugs, which we at fanatic used to send out.

2). Utilise the multi box system which eliminates the tolerance.

BTW. Genuine futures will fit in the fanatic/north kite multi box. If you want to use after market fins.

You're spot on, a longer screw may do the job as the thread at the top of the hole seems fine. I'm using the supplied fins, which have quite deep recesses where the screws make contact, meaning there's only a couple of threads to hold on.

@JBFletch, what do you mean "Utilise the multibox system"? When I pulled the side fins out I saw the obvious "Multibox" embossed inside the top of the boxes... (I know, I know, blind as a bat)

I bought the board from Kite Republic in St Kilda. Gave them a call and spoke to Cesar who was super helpful, asked for photos and will submit as a warranty claim. It sounds like they're planning to drill it out, then stick in a "plug" with a new thole.

The mutli box has lugs on the side, like a FCS box, but uses FUTURE fins.It means that if there is stretching of the finbox, during manufacturing, the fin should still fit.(or it increases the chances of this)Sounds like the outcome was resolved.Happy days
