For 90% of us, renting/demoing is not an option. And besides, if you are choosing a board near your limits, one demo session in whatever the conditions happen to be at the time is not a 100% indicator of how it will perform for you longer term.
Why is this the case?
You borrow a board for the weekend.
Take it to your fave spot, fit your fave fins and ride your fave wave.
Agreed most "demo days" have less than suitable conditions but doing your own, is a sure win.
Sure, if you had it for the entire weekend and could surf a few sessions, and the surf conditions cooperated, you would certainly get an idea if it was
wrong for you. But as I have tried to push my limits, I find it takes a few sessions to begin to understand the dynamics of a board - where to put your feet when paddling out, where to move your feet when turning, how to get through whitewash, how it will respond, etc. I can't remember any of my boards (where I was pushing my limits) where it was love at first sight. It has often been the opposite.
