Surfed my prone log/noserider on the weekend, had a ball but my back is killing me.
It seems that all the talk in the SUP forum is about progressive/modern shapes and surfing.
Is there an equivalent to the longboarding log noserider. This is the type of surfing I'm enjoying at the moment and I'm getting too unyoung to throw boards around, plus I don't want to.

P.s. I'm not talking about fat fugly gumby boards.

Laird surfer 10' Surfer fun. Had my composite construction one a few weeks and love it. The shape and weight give it the "log" feel but also turns off the tail.
Reviews in the board talk section under EPS Laird Surfers. The JL Striker or Black and blue have also seen good noseriders styling on them. Bit lighter than Laird from memory. Not sure if other Sups have noserider bottom curves?

As above, the Laird 10' or 10'6" are great longboard style boards. I have the 10'6".
Only thing I would say, is if you are looking for a hang 10, flat as an ironing board, log, then the Laird might not meet your needs completely. It has too much nose rocker to be a true plank. I can get five fully over, regularly, but 10 is a lot harder as it pushes a fair bit of water and you need a fast section of wave to get all the toes up there. On both my mals, I can get 10 over on the right wave, so as a comparison the Laird is close.

Many brands and shapers make quite decent noserider SUP now.

Rune, it's a bit hard. most of the sup nose riders are pretty large boards which are very wide and thick eg the starby above is still 166 litres of foam and 30" wide. Gong sup in France seem to be the only ones making the real deal. Cant show you the links as I'm on an ipad. They do one that's about 9'2"x24".

if you look for it in google it should translate for you. Go to products, sup, choose your sup, nose rider and then check out the freak STR 105 litre. Now that's more like it. If only we could get em in oz.......

With it coming in 6" increments from 9' to 11" you are not constrained to just the larger options plus they are designed to seriously surf. (check out the vid of Guts in the review section) Plus I have had it in (for me) plenty big enough waves and was wrapped how well it handled them
The added bonus is the fin set up meaning you can run it from a quad, thruster, twinnie or single which is something I don't think any of the other "Log" SUPs have.
I'm having too much fun as a quady & thruster now however am thinking of getting a nice big single fin for those peeling points

I have a mctavish red line 9 inch I run as a single fin on the 10ft 6. At awesome. Haven't tried the quad set up yet. How does it go

rune... I was on a quest for the perfect noserider/longboard. I tried a bunch, but was never happy with any of them. I gave up the search.

In July, I tried a friends board and ta da.... back in the longboard business!

The Naish Nalu 10'6 (mine is actually an Alana 10'6... same board, different colors)

What a great board. Turns very easily and nose rides pretty well. Surfs all size waves with ease.
Super stoked with it. I surfed it every session for 2.5 months.

I also picked up a 10'6 Laird 5 fin, 2012 model Surfer.
It nose rides very well... super fun and controllable from the nose, but I have found it more sluggish through the turns than the Alana.

Every time I want to ride longboard SUP... I chose the Alana....

How does the 11' surf ? in your opinion which one surf's better you have the latest boards or the Surftech ?

I first bought the 11ft second hand so it was a surf tech. My first surf I had a single fin in to far forward and on my first wave I basically did a bottom turn and kept going in a circle straight of re back of the wave. I couldn't believe how an 11 ft board could be that loose. It surfs just awesome.
Deciding that yes this is what I was going to surf I bought a new one of the latest 10ft 6. I have found the board I'll probably surf for a good time to come. The difference is a little more stability when the water is moving around a lot or there is a chop on the surface and as an option to go for a flat, water paddle, and better for the kids and friends to have a paddle on.The 10ft 6 surfs better but that taking nothing away from how, the 11ft surfs
If it's just for you to surf I'd go the 10.6 but if you want the other options the 11 would be the go and you won't lose much in the sur facility.

Just another point on board choice. If you go the Laird, get at least the 10' or the 10'6" (I'm 77kg and have the 10'6") and ditch the fins. Get a 10" fatboy or similar and ride it as a single fin. That's when it really gets in the trim.

I didn't have a big enough fin for my Laird... so today, I took my monster Naish fin and screwed it in a best I could (slots not deep enough)

Totally different board. All of a sudden it turned... it got loose.... all the things it was missing with the Laird thruster set-up and the quad option.

So sorry I gave up on this board.... I thought for sure, that if it didn't turn with the stock fin set-ups... it wasn't going to. I was WRONG!

All the stuff I said before.... nevermind

Damn good board now that I have the fin thingy sorted out. I was all set to sell it.

I'd be interested in which board you think paddles the fastest (catches waves with the least physical effort)
and which one you can get furthest out on the nose.

I didn't mention it but sometimes in my older (3 box) Surftech Pearson Laird 10'6" I use a Cheyne Horan Star Fin...
....works really well if there isn't any kelp (which, unfortunately, there is where I surf most of the time).

I really wanted a decent log SUP but every production board I looked at was to chunky. I ended up getting my shaper to make me one custom, we worked through the aspects i liked about my traditional log and the parts i didn’t like in production longboard style SUPs and came up with a killer design!

10’5’ x 28 x 3 ¾ around 120L. Single concave in the nose rolled in the middle and V in the tail. Refined rails tried cutting down volume where possible! Wide point is slightly pulled back to give it better hold on the nose and because of the pulled in tail still can be thrown around. No worries, gents. Glad someone is thinking about it! I'm keen to whittle things down if I can. That is, once I get my new mini-er minion from simon....and convince the better half it is a worthwhile investment.

Would love to see a few photos of the rails of both your boards, possibly also I showing thickness as well? I'm thinking you could still have comparably refined rails through the tail and still bring it down to 9'6"x25"x3 3/4" or 7/8" through the centre for about 95-100 litres? I can handle a 98litre 7'10" airborne, so hoping the extra length would compensate, and I could go 95 L but til I see the proper design in 3D I'm just dreaming.....

anyway, if someone is around Torquay anytime with a board like that I'd love a paddle.

Pity, Surftech used to do a cracka 9'8" Takayama. It was a fairly narrow tippy board, so ended up discontinued. I was keen on getting one, but was advised they could only do a custom and only then if they had kept the mould. ??

I suppose my only choice now is the 10' Laird Surfer. A much wider board than I probably need. Beggars can't be choosers? Utterly budget, I could play with the fins in my 11' x 24 Laguna Bay log and see if it will respond to a paddle.

I.E., when your "Broke and Stoked", sometimes you just need to improvise, experiment and have fun! ??
