Great result for Marie Buchanan from the UK. I think this might be the best international race result ever by a GB SUPer.

I'd love to do it mate, and I'd have a good view of the top guys from the back for the first 30 seconds. But work, family, and finances make it a remote possibility. Hopefully more UK paddlers will make a regular trip over though, it looks like a really fantastic event with conditions and equipment more similar to those in the U.K. compared to the Hawaiian events.

It's actually starting to go the Hawaiian direction with lots of chat amongst alot of the top 20 and more to make it an unlimited race. Obviously that won't suit everyone but it was interesting to hear the chat at the preso and listen to the many varied opinions. I spoke to 4 of the board designers over the weekend and they are all talking unlimited development. 14's are still winning though
I'm going to be even further out the backdoor now.

I think that everywhere in the world there is a resurgence of the UL class, principally led by "ex-racers" who no longer want to be constrained by arbitrary board size regulations. But I doubt that the boards that will end up being raced outside of Hawaii will look much like the traditional Hawaiian DW boards. I suspect they will be longer versions of current 14ft race designs instead.

Just wait a couple of years mate and then come back and tell me that. Nothing happens overnight. But the early signs are there IMO.

Unlimiteds allow a wider range of people to compete on a more even playing field. That's a good start for both racing and leisure alike.

One of the things that is changing in many local SUPing areas is the growth of custom shaping. You should know this well in Oz. I think that these shapers will lead a resurgence of the UL class. It removes the problem of shipping and the costs of middlemen and import taxes. I can buy an UL custom board in the UK far cheaper than I can buy a production UL SIC, for instance, and the standard of construction will be better.
