Not sure what you guys are experiencing. But I've noticed a growing number of jetskis hitting my local waterways.
Quite a few times lately they have been hitting my surfing areas jumping the waves & really stirring up the water enough to make a SUP rider fall & also mess the water up enough to make it quite difficult to catch a wave let alone even ride a wave due to the crazy chop they cause. Even when they're around 100 meters away.
Some of them who don't know the rules are even surfing the swell & narrowly missing surfers. But this is only on rare occasions.
Although I don't mind them hitting a few waves when passing & moving on to more isolated areas. Or the ones doing a bit of tow surfing. But some are just crazy & ignorant enough to hang around for over an hour or so causing me to leave in frustration.
And also annoying when they have numerous kilometers of isolated beach to go to.
I think some of them are just showing off around swimmers, surfers & spectators.

As long as they're operating within the law there's not much you can do, a quick look at maritime nsw shows a distance of 60 m is required from swimmers etc and 200 m is the required distance from other water users while doing tow in. Personally I don't have a problem with them. I don't own one by the way

Rare to see jet skis here in Tofino but a couple made national news last June when they were out near surfers. The town has banned them launching from the local beaches but my understanding can not pass rules on where they go once in the water. That is a federal responsibility I believe.

Maybe just spear them

Water world called them " Stinkers " for a good reason ... your out there enjoying fresh nature and they are fuel exhausted you up.
Agreed, the frustration of having glassy longboard waves woop'd up by jetski wake isn't making them any friends

Years ago I had a Yamaha Wave Runner 750 for the purpose of tow surfing, wake boarding and they are are great tool.
You learn to develop skills fast in the surf as its not fun being rolled.

In the surf, used to go far away from surfers like over 1km. Even after launching going 200m outside the furthest surfer out you could hear verbal abuse. Of course I was breaking NZ Maritime rules of more that 5knots within 200m of shore, towing a rider without an observer etc but absolutely no danger to any one except ourselves. With any motor you have to use and maintain regularly so would take it out after work for a blast in the harbor where observe all the rules.

I had a neighbor that used to race them and had a Sea Doo 1000 that was so much faster that you need to wear goggles and never single skied before and go up after a few goes and fun to try something different but wakeboarding more my style. In the surf I found it too big and not maneuverable.

As everyone is aware the majority of jet ski users don't care about other people in the water.
Even in flat water most of them don't have a spatial awareness and in past summers there has been injuries and deaths.
I've seen some close calls windsurfing off Takapuna as there is a boat ramp that attracted them for a while, I think public complaints lead to them being policed.

There was one time off an Auckland beach I had flat mate on the back and I got stopped by Police launch as they said I was exceeding 5 knots within 200 which I wasn't but trim tab wasn't working so pushing a wake. I was made to take off the cover and they noted serial numbers etc. Then the usually reliable motor didn't start so they had to tow me back in.

With tow in its awesome but around Tarakaki coast only hand full of ramps to launch from and most importantly you need a really good driver to get you in the best position and when you had a average driver only average waves.
After 2 years sold it and rather have other toys.

A lot of them on Sydney waterways not necessarily in the surf - particularly George's river - port hacking . I don't trust them - they keep running into each other - one day ther will be none left

I really think some riders just don't realise how much wake they cause. And are just too lazy to go elsewhere that's a good distance away from surfers.
But it's going to get worse if what I'm hearing is correct that jet ski sales have climbed by 90%.
At this stage I can definitely see it on my local waterways.

I remember a cyclone season or two ago Kirra and Greenmount was massive. It seemed like there were more skis than surfers in the water and I remember thinking it was a miracle that no one was killed or injured out there. It really was ridiculous, there were skis charging in and out through the white water, trying to avoid the bombs and find their surfers. Apparently it really pissed off the guys that paddled out and I recall some words in the local news. As it turned out I heard maritime safety must have thought the same thing too and took lots of photos and handed out lots of fines that day.
I don't think I have seen it that bad since then.

Well I think it will happen again.
Just yesterday. Swell was crap even for foilboarding. But there was a swell with backwash swells from shore mainly at the area I surf. Again jetskis jumping & churning up water making it difficult to stand let alone catching a wave. So I nearly called it a day but they moved on. They obviously are ignoring the annoying wake they cause us.

I'm not sure where you live, but where I live on the central coast NSW they have become a huge issue, the amount over summer increased drastically, as it did with other water users which may be part of the problem itself, the real issue is if they are just oblivious of the rules or if they are ignorant, and honestly I think it is a good mixture, sadly I have had a few near misses in the last 5-6 months that where alot closer than i would've liked, hover most of them do abide by the rules but its the case that the couple of dicks ruin it for everyone

You can call it Choppys now. Haaa!

In the UK, I complained to the coastguard on safety grounds. Didn't get much response from complaining about noise and pollution, affecting birds and seals. As soon as I showed them this, the jet skiers had personal home visits from the coastguard and things got a lot better.

Had an experience at Mangawhai on my SUP a few years back. Wasn't that popular due to being the only SUP rider out, but when a few jetskis came out and did exactly as in the pic above I was over it and called them over and told them to faark off.
One of the prone surfers nearly got killed, prob about a meter between him paddling out and this jetski dickhead landing square on him. So none to them spoke up, and I decided to take the lead on that.

Turned out pretty well in the end. The proners learned that I actually cared about their health. And I was the only one with the balls to take the jetskiiers to task. Needless to say, after they were sent on their way, it was a harmonious session had by all.
