Having launched a couple of boards off the roof of my car, I wondered who was liable if one of these hit someone due to my negligence.
My insurance broker assures me this scenario is covered under the motor vehicles third party policy.
For a few years I've wondered about liability in the water - if my uninsured board kills a 3 year old kid in the shore break, what is my liability.
Again asked the broker, and got advise it would be covered under house and contents insurance.
I'm not convinced.
Anyone got any knowledge / experience / information?
Alternative is to insure every board as a watercraft, which while expensive, may save losing the house in a liability claim.
I'm a worrier, by the way.

SUP Vic says membership gives you public liability insurance and personal accident cover. supvic.tidyhq.com/ $50 is pretty cheap for any kind of insurance.

I'd be interested to know too, never thought about it before. I'm in NSW are there any memberships up here that offer the same PL and personal accident cover?

From the SUP Vic website

"We are the only SUP club in Australia that provides it's members with full public liability insurance at events and any SUP related activity as well as personal accident cover so in the unlikely event of an accident you can be assured you and your family won't be effected financially. If you live interstate and insurance cover is something that interests you, then join SUP Vic and receive all our standard member benefits"

Be careful - it's a standard sporting club policy - which means cover is not universal. You're covered for things connected with the club and its activities, ie at SUPVIC gazetted events (that is anything organised by SUPVIC or one of its Pods) and travelling to and from or when representing the club at another event (or travelling to and from) within Australia.

Mishaps caused by you when driving down to Phillip Island to your own weekender would most likely not be covered, but the public liability component of your House and Contents policy might.

So no cover for non "event" supping, surfing etc?

This isn't the forum for getting into a long discussion about how it works.

Nozza , I know that you may be taking this seriously but it isn't an issue.

if we worried about this type of thing all the time we wouldn't leave the house.

Go for a paddle or a surf and forget about it.

I would not ask the broker, but the insurance company itself.

In my experience, everything is covered, except during contests where you need a specific sport insurance.

At the risk of sending Smashed20lastnight to sleep, or educating young TimmyK against his will, I did some reading today in between avoiding accruals and receiving the fin delivery.
Found a Q.U.T. article / thing, and an American opinion/ ruling / thing / from California.
Re assuring thing is both reported zero incidents of surf craft (I had to non specify it out from sup) colliding with people causing claims.
Lots of cases of people being hit "between the flags" by surf craft, but legal action occurs against the lifesavers / council for failing to provide a safe environment when they promised they would.
Lots of cases of body surfers or waterskiers head butting the bottom when the council / water authority promised it was deep enough, again cases are against council / water authority / conservation authority.
These cases are always very sad because the plaintiff is usually a quadriplegic, so my light hearted summary is probably not appropriate.
Surprising number of cases of windsurfers going each other for ignoring the heading out has right of way, or the other way around.
Surf etiquette / traditional surf rules gain legal status in surfer vs. surfer collisions, but it seems are un enforceable when one person refuses to play by the rules.
No one wants to take responsibility for their own acts, actions, stupidity, or negligence.
General reassuring thing, is, it seems if you enter the surf zone, or "outside the flags" stretches of water, on any craft, or without one, you are going somewhere that is dangerous, and that you acknowledge you know it is dangerous by entering the unpatrolled zone, and by entering the zone, you accept there is risk of injury or harm, and you cannot expect someone else to pay for your injury or harm, regardless of how this occurs, your fault or someone else's, weather it is caused by your stupidity or someone else's, or your negligence or someone else's, or just by bad luck or misadventure.
So you don't need 3rd party insurance for your watercraft in these zones.
Except you may be years in court before you get the result that says you weren't at fault.
And that may be expensive.
So make your own decision about insurance.
Disclaimer.
I am a surveyor with no legal knowledge, who is currently more interested in longboard fins than third party liability.
This is my summary of long boring documents skimmed over briefly today.
Do not take this as advice in any way.
I am not qualified to give advice, and do not give it.
Do you own research and decide on what arse cover you need to purchase.
Own arse cover firmly attached.
And the fin delivery was much more interesting.
