Nothing wrong with a steamer if you are bouncing around on rocks. Also the helmet and impact vest at Kaiti Beach.....no one knows you are there.......gotta take sens8ble precautions ?

The water is warm.....if you got a 2/3 on and sun is shining and no wind.....you are over heating. But in the morning when its still nearly dark......one needs a little teeny tiny bit of early morning warmth

I love the car on the beach and dog inside! Not to mention WAVES! There has been bugger all here on the central coast for 2018 so far. I have got to go to my nephew's wedding in Wanaka at the end of March so I've booked cheap tickets to Christchurch. Which means one whole week in a campervan with my SUP and my child bride! Any local tips on SUP spots not too far from there....?!

Was horrendously big surf here for about a week. Which is why i was surfing "tucked away" spots like Sponge Bay and Kaiti Beach
As for good surf near Christchurch......i am miles away from there......But if your bride doesn't mind a slower pace of life with no night clubs ......Kaikoura is definitely worthy of consideration. Google search Maunganamu surf break

Check out Sumner and New Brighton, all along this coastline up towards Mangamaunu North of Kaikoura have awesome waves and setups, all accessible along SH1, be aware that SH1 has recently reopened in and around Kaikoura due to earthquake damage. Crowds haven't been invented along this coastline though Sumner and New Brighton can get busy at times. Also check out Banks Peninsular lots of set ups from point breaks to beach breaks and very thing in between.

like everywhere else respect the locals goes along way, SUP friendly though not earthquake friendly.

Wanaka and neighbouring Queenstown have beautiful lakes, very scenic and "middle earth" also check out Tekapo on the way through to Wanaka.

stay stoked

Told me after the expedition that he was cautious and avoided the rocks ... it's getting some use on the river as I'm back in town for the summer.
